Proverbs 22: King James Bible
A Good Name – Daily Devotion of Proverbs chapter twenty two, Verse 1
1 A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.
Daily Inspiration from This Verse – A Good Name
There are two different things going on in the verse above. One happens to lead to the other, at least if we are looking at it in fleshly terms. However, should we take a look at it through spiritual eyes, it would seem to me, that it would work in reverse. Let me explain…
Speaking on fleshly or physical terms, you’re more likely to be looked upon favorably, after earning a good name. And I use that term “earning” deliberately, because a good name isn’t bought or simply assumed.
A good name is earned in several different ways. Being honest, diligent, smart, fair, and humble, are all ways that build up a good name. It has nothing to do with money or finances, nor does it have anything to do with what class of citizenry we are.
Everyone has the opportunity to build a good name, but it often takes some time to do so. On the other hand, one bad decision can tear it all down.
In this sense, a good name can be built and torn down in a similar manner to trust. It takes time to earn, and can fall down like a stack of cards, if we do something to tarnish that good name, or violate that trust.
So we can take from the verse above, the path to favor with others, is by building a good name. But what about as it relates to the Father?
For that, we need to take a spiritual approach. There is a name above all names, and that is Christ Jesus. It is through and in this name, that we can gain a good name spiritually. Our works, despite how good they are, and despite how much it may build up our names here physically, are but filthy rags spiritually.
Without that good name, the name of Jesus being noticed upon us by the Father, there is no favor that he’ll grant, and there’s no way to earn it otherwise. All that said, it is his loving favor that causes for us to have the opportunity to enjoy that good name in the first place.
That is what I meant by working in reverse spiritually. Without his loving favor, we’d not even have the opportunity to be in his presence, through the only means available to us, which is by way of Christ Jesus.
Because he loved the world, he gave to it his only begotten Son. A once and for all sacrificial lamb, sent to fulfill the law, and also die in our stead, as a perfect sacrifice without blemish or spot. When it comes down to getting favor from man, or getting favor from the Lord, we should always seek to get favor with the Father.
Favor with man will not get us any further with favor from the Lord. On the other hand, gaining favor with the Lord will in many different ways give way to favor from others.
As always, the Lord’s way is far more beneficial both short and long term. We just need to be obedient to him, and seek out his will for our lives, and his favor will cause for all things to work together for good to those whom he loves, according to his purpose.

Ephesians 1: King James Bible
19 And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to usward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, 20 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, 21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:
22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, 23 Which is his body, the fullness of him that filleth all in all.
Thank you for your Word as always, and for the instruction you give pertaining to life and a good name. Please grant us your favor in everything that we set our hand to do, in your service, and within your will. Help us to use the good name that you’ve given us, which is the name above all names, to play our part in all that you’ve planned. This we ask in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
