Daily Inspiration from Proverbs 14 P.169 – A Heavy Heart

Proverbs 14: King James Bible

A Heavy Heart – Daily Devotion of Proverbs chapter fourteen, Verses 13-14

13 Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful; and the end of that mirth is heaviness. 14 The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways: and a good man shall be satisfied from himself.

Daily Inspiration from These Verses – A Heavy Heart

If these verses are the kind, that you’d normally read over once and continue on to the next, I wouldn’t blame you. In all honesty, that’s what I believe I’ve done in the past. A good reason for sure, to be making these devotionals, to take a closer look into pieces of scripture that you may otherwise have glazed over.

When I read verse 13, the first thing that came to mind, was the suicide of Robin Williams. There was a man who was synonymous with laughter, miserable enough to take his own life. From what I understand, some of the most depressed people, are comics. This seems counter intuitive due to their profession, but I’ve heard it to be true more than once.

Despite whatever mask we put on for the public, or for friends and family, you can’t deceive your own heart. You can say that you’re happy all the live long day, but if you’re not happy, your heart knows what’s going on.

Another group of people that came to mind were drug addicts, or alcoholics. You can drink to forget your problems, but then you awake the next day with the same problems, maybe even more than you did before you hit the bottle. At the end of that mirth, is heaviness.

So what’s the point? The point is, everyone who wears a mask will take it off at some point. And then what? I believe that this piece of scripture might just be saying, that is is better to resolve a problem, than to cover it up, much like laughter covers up the sorrowful heart, because eventually, you’ll stop laughing.

Which might just lead into the second verse above, about backsliding in heart. We’ve got a good idea about what it means to be a backslider, as it relates to our spiritual walk with the Father. But it is possible, that we may not hold to the same mindset concerning matters of the heart.

As we touched on in the past, God the Father is extremely interested, in what is going on with our hearts. And if a backslidden heart is in any way similar to a backslidden spirit, or a backslidden life, there is hope.

I’m walking and talking evidence, that there is hope for backsliders. So if there is hope for the spiritually backslidden, then there is hope for the backslidden in heart. This is something between you and the Father, and he’s the one who can show you what to do about this, through his Word and through prayer.

James 4: King James Bible

8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. 9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

1 Peter 1: King James Bible

6 Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: 7 That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:

8 Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory: 9 Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.

Thank you for your Word, and for causing us to take a closer look into different verses that you’ve included. Should there be any of us who are backslidden in heart, or with a heart full of sorrows, perhaps many sorrows, lift us up Father, and cleanse our hearts. Give us cause to take joy in all that you’d have us to do, and the wisdom to stay away from anything that would try to steal our joy. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ we pray.

Did you know that Jesus has the remedy for a heavy heart?
