Proverbs 16: King James Bible
A Man’s Heart – Daily Devotion of Proverbs chapter sixteen, Verse 9
9 A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the Lord directeth his steps.
Daily Inspiration from These Verses – A Man’s Heart
Thus far in chapter 16, we’ve talked about preparations of the heart, and the answer of the tongue being from from the Lord. We’ve also spoken of the Lord weighing our spirit, versus how we see ourselves.
Here is a similar verse, and would rest easily along side verses one and two of this chapter. It has a similar flavor to the others, in that, it gives us insight into how the Lord operates.
But this verse doesn’t necessarily make an agreement between a man’s heart and the steps that the Lord is directing. What I mean is, you can have your heart set on one thing, and the Lord will direct your steps away from that, and into what he’s prepared for you.
I wonder how many times in my own life, the Lord dragged me kicking and screaming away from what I thought was best? Too many to keep track of I’d imagine. Kind of like dragging a child away from the candy aisle. My heart being set on one thing, couldn’t see the forest for the trees.
The thing is, you never realize it’s the Lord intervening, and keeping you from getting involved with things that’ll alter your course (possibly forever), till well after the fact. I can think of several different occasions, and every day, I’d be praying that the Lord’s will be done in my life, then get upset at him when things don’t happen or work out the way I think they should. Ever been there?
But only afterward, can I see that I was inviting him to intervene in my life, just to struggle with how he wanted to intervene. I never claimed to be the sharpest knife in the drawer. So when a man’s heart devises his own way, the Father could have a whole different ballgame planned out for him.
I feel compelled to point out, that the Lord directs our steps. This is a form of guidance, not easy street. He may need to guide us through things, instead of guiding us around them. Often, he may guide us into things that we may try to avoid at all costs.
This reminds me of a piece I wrote quite awhile ago called,”Why was Jesus Tempted in the Wilderness?” The Spirit of the Lord lead Jesus straight into the wilderness after he came down upon him as a dove. He wasn’t lead around the wilderness, nor was he translated to a better place. But right into the wilderness.
The Lord will direct our steps if we ask him to, but will we appreciate where he directs? Should we be finding that the answer to that is no, then there’s a lesson to be learned, and we’d all be better off to understand that going in.
Why? Because there will be a time, where we come out of whatever we’re directed into. And should we remain obedient to the Lord, we’ll come out stronger, and better for it. The Lord does nothing for nothing.
Remember, when the Lord directed the steps of Jesus through the wilderness, he returned from the wilderness in the power of the Holy Spirit!

Thank you for your care, and your attention. We’re humbled by the very idea that you, the Father, and Creator of all things, give us such intimate attention. Please direct our steps Lord, and forgive us should we strive against you unwittingly. Open our eyes to your lessons, and to your counsel, and open up our understanding for all situations, so we don’t make things harder on ourselves as we head in the direction you lead. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ we pray.
