Daily Inspiration from Proverbs 16 P. 220 – A Wellspring of Life

Proverbs 16: King James Bible

A Wellspring of Life – Daily Devotion of Proverbs chapter sixteen, Verses 21-24

21 The wise in heart shall be called prudent: and the sweetness of the lips increaseth learning. 22 Understanding is a wellspring of life unto him that hath it: but the instruction of fools is folly. 23 The heart of the wise teacheth his mouth, and addeth learning to his lips. 24 Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.

Daily Inspiration from These Verses – A Wellspring of Life

There’s a handful of different body parts being made reference to in the cluster of verses above. It would appear to me, that the Lord is trying to drive a point home.

First, let’s take a look at the characters involved.

  • the heart
  • the tongue
  • the bones
  • the lips
  • the soul

I know, the soul isn’t typically looked upon as a body part. In my opinion, it should be. Considering that there are a host of different body parts that we can still survive without, yet can’t survive without the soul, I think that makes it just as important of a body part as the heart.

Notice a part that isn’t mentioned at all. That would be the mind, or the brain. There’s great reason for that. The mind tends to lean toward the carnal side of things, and the heart can deal more intelligently with the spiritual side of things.

The mind is completely bypassed above, going straight from the heart, right out of the mouth, or through the lips. In my experience, this is a piece of information that is critical to understand and deal with as a reality.

A wellspring of life comes from understanding. But not just any form of understanding, but understanding given to us by the Lord himself. If we can grasp the connection between the heart condition, and the mouth, better yet, what comes out of it, we’ll all have a good starting point in order to make some real changes happen with ourselves.

I’ve said similar things in the past in these devotionals, as well as on other pages of the website… That would be, what comes out of your mouth when you’re not trying to be careful, will give you some useful information about the spiritual condition of your heart.

In about an hour, if someone were to accidentally drop a hammer or a brick on your toe, what would come out of your mouth? When sudden tragedy or some form of calamity hits you broadside, what are the types of things that you find yourself saying?

Think about it for awhile, and if you find that the things that you wind up saying are not something that you’d normally say, and are also things that you wouldn’t want to be caught saying in the presence of the Lord, it may be that you need more Word of God in your system.

Before we close this devotional up. There is something that I would like to have you try on your own after reading this. This is an exercise for those of us who may be suffering from negative thoughts.

When your mind starts thinking all kinds of things about you may be damaging or depressing, open up the Word of God and start reading it out loud. What you’ll find is, your mind has to shut up and listen to what your mouth is saying.

A heart that is true to the Father, will trump the mind along with any impure thoughts that come by. We can activate it through the mouth.

Life and death are in the power of the tongue, and those who speak life from the heart, will be a wellspring indeed. To yourself, and also to those who are around to hear it.

The Father has pointed out the relationship between the heart and the mouth for our own good, and to be a blessing to those around us as well.

45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

1 Peter 3: King James Bible

9 Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing. 10 For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: 11 Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it.

Thank you for your wisdom, understanding, and your knowledge, that you’ve shed abroad upon all of us. If any of us are found to be lacking, fill us Lord with any or all of these, till they be overflowing from our hearts, straight out of our mouths. Help us and lead us Lord, to do whatever part we must, to allow the reconditioning of our hearts to be more like yours, and less carnal. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ we pray.

Would you consider the things that come out of your mouth when you stub your toe, a wellspring of life?
