Daily Inspiration from Proverbs 19 P. 276 – An Ungodly Witness

Proverbs 19: King James Bible

An Ungodly Witness – Daily Devotion of Proverbs chapter nineteen, Verses 25-29

25 Smite a scorner, and the simple will beware: and reprove one that hath understanding, and he will understand knowledge. 26 He that wasteth his father, and chaseth away his mother, is a son that causeth shame, and bringeth reproach.

27 Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge. 28 An ungodly witness scorneth judgment: and the mouth of the wicked devoureth iniquity. 29 Judgments are prepared for scorners, and stripes for the back of fools.

Daily Inspiration from These Verses – An Ungodly Witness

We can easily gather the following from the five verses above. That would be: It isn’t a healthy long term plan, to be a scorner. Clearly, the Lord’s not mincing words concerning them. It is the scorner I had in mind, when I titled this devotional “The Ungodly Witness.”

When you think about it, that is exactly what a scorner will do in some way, shape, or form. An ungodly witness is in fact, a fool. Well, at least if we go by the definition that the Lord gives us in his Word. I believe that’s why the scorner and the fool are both included in the last verse above.

Judgments and stripes are awaiting those who fall into those categories. A fool doesn’t have to be a scorner, but one who scorns at the Father or of the things of God, is clearly a fool. The wicked is also brought up in these verses, and those who are wicked also fall under the same umbrella.

But as far as a scorner being an ungodly witness is concerned, I’d bet that most of us can understand how that works. I know I’ve run into my fair share of scorners, and they all have a similar M.O. .

They reject with great zeal any form of the gospel, and do their utmost to either convince you that there is no God, or attempt to make you seem like the idiot for being a believer. Ever run into the type? They are just as zealous with their ungodly witness, as a believer would be concerning a Godly witness.

It isn’t very often at all, that they just simply don’t care about the Lord, and don’t want to hear about him. There is usually an attempt of some kind, to drag you and your witness into some kind of verbal weeds, with no intention to ever hear a word you’re saying. I’ve experienced this in almost any way one could. In person, over the phone, but especially online.

Without the direct intervention of the Lord, you won’t reach a scorner. Take a look at the first thing the Lord has to say to us above. Strike a scorner and the simple will beware. Now, we can’t go around smacking people around.

However, in those different situations that I mentioned above, it is important to recognize who’s watching an interaction between you as God’s representative, and the scorner, who represents everything else. In the discourse, should you do well, and stay true to the Word of God, you may be instructing others, or answering their questions.

You may never reach that scorner, but you may have reached the person standing within earshot. Debating a scorner is a fruitless venture online, if your intentions are to win over the proud scorner. But the seeds that you may plant for those silent readers of an online back and forth could be extremely fruitful.

But as a scorner or a fool will bear an ungodly witness, it is our responsibility to recognize our part, which is to have an answer in season and out of season. To be on the ready to give an account of what you believe and why.

2 Timothy 4: King James Bible

4 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; 2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine.

3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

1 Timothy 6: King James Bible

3 If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; 4 He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,

5 Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself. 6 But godliness with contentment is great gain.

1 Peter 4: King James Bible

18 And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?

Prayer

Father,

Thank you for being so clear in your Word, and that if the world is to see us as fools, that it is for Christ’s sake. Lord, place your Word always on our lips, and keep a constant stir of remembrance of all that you’ve taught us, shown us, and done for us, either through your Word or otherwise. May we always be ready to contend for the faith as you lead, and cause for us to have great victory, all for your glory. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ we pray.

Amen

  1. Goodmorning Brian,
In answer to today’s question, yes I have debated with a young man who questioned not God’s exsietance, as much as he questioned His law & strickness as he called it. I found a quiet voice soothed his wrath so we could discuss things without a shouting match. I’m sure Satan was upset about that. Also questioning & listening I found out the hurt he was carrying was very real. As I listened to him, he gave me the same courtesy. I don’t think he left convinced of the gospel, but I believe he left thinking about it in a less negative way.
I have also had the opposite reaction with my lawn care & snow removal guy, so I pray for him waiting for the next opportunity.
    God bless, Janet Goodwin

    • Hi there Janet,
You never know what the Lord will do to all of the seeds you planted with either of those folks. There is always a chance that there is some fertile ground in there somewhere, amongst the rocks and the weeds, and that a seed you planted may grow. The Lord may need to water it from time to time.

I’ve fount that there are two scenarios that are common when someone comes across angry when they’re really hurt (like the first person you spoke about). Scenario one, there is a person or people involved somehow, that provoked him earlier in life to hate the Lord, or the things of the Lord (which is where I’d place this person possibly). The second, is that something bad happened to them or loved ones, and places the blame squarely on God.

And there is something far more sinister that has been going on generationally, concerning child abuse and Satanism, or other cult/occult family circumstances. In that world, they literally train their children to be enemies with the Father, in ways so perverse and disgusting, I’d rather not mention it here.

As I said in the devotional, without the Father’s direct intervention, these folks can’t receive what we’re giving them, because in one way or the other, they’ve been trained to be against the Lord and the gospel of Christ Jesus. Only the Lord can penetrate through the defenses that people (consciously/subconsciously, demonically, or through abuse) place around their hearts. We just need to be obedient seed delivery systems when it comes time for planting, once the Lord has made a space for us to act. As you did!

Thanks for your comment Janet, and may the Lord bless you in good health and in every way possible in the name Jesus!
      In Christ,
      Brian
