The Belt of Truth Meaning

The Belt of Truth Meaning

Before we look at the Belt of Truth, we’re going to take a better look at the verse preceding it which would be verse 13, and discover what the Holy Spirit is directing Paul the Apostle to write. If you haven’t read the intro to this study, then you’re missing out! Please go check it out to discover what the Lord would have us to be equipped against on the Whole Armor of God page.

But before we get into the study itself, maybe we should get our eyes on verses 13-18, and chew on them real slow like a good thick piece of steak. This is definitely a meat of the Word situation, but is simplified to look like a milk of the Word situation. Let’s take a look.

Ephesians 6:13-18

I uploaded this image for you to take and share if you so desire.

13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: 18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

Taking what God Gives Us

having-done-all-to-stand-the-belt-of-truth-meaningWherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

On the top page of this Whole Armor of God study, I made sure to point out that it was good in the sight of the Holy Spirit to specifically say to “put on” the Whole Armor of God. This is an action not a fanciful way to say something else. When he said to put it on, he meant it.

Here again as if to back up what he’s already said, he now says to take unto you the Armor. In order to take it and put it on, God must have provided his Armor for us to use in the first place. And the explanation as to why he caused for it to be made available to us is explained in the rest of the verse.

What does it mean to be able to stand in the evil day? What is the evil day? We can get a better grasp about what Paul is talking about if we dig into the Word a little bit.

Proverbs 15:

15 All the days of the afflicted are evil: but he that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast.

Proverbs 16:

4 The Lord hath made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil.

Jeremiah 17:

17 Be not a terror unto me: thou art my hope in the day of evil.

Jeremiah 17:

18 Let them be confounded that persecute me, but let not me be confounded: let them be dismayed, but let not me be dismayed: bring upon them the day of evil, and destroy them with double destruction.

Matthew 6:

34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

Ephesians 5:

16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.redeem-the-time-the-belt-of-truth-meaning

After taking a look into the scriptures, there are a few ways that we can look at the “evil day”, and all of which could apply to verse 13 in Ephesians 6. First and most often used in the Old Testament, is by way of saying the day of reckoning. When judgement of the Lord comes down on those that have angered the him.

Rain falls on the just and the unjust alike, and I believe that it is all of the attributes given in the Whole Armor of God through the Holy Ghost that preserves us when the Lord strikes a nation or a people. Whether he strikes or simply lifts his protection, the end result is typically the same.

This is (I believe) why the Holy Spirit says, “that ye may be able to withstand”. Withstand what’s coming, what’s happening, what may be going on all around us. These things could apply on grand schemes like cities, towns, states or nations. Being well equipped to withstand the coming waves of trouble that could be poured out, whatever it may be.

Another way to view the evil day is the fact that the days are full of trials and toil. One way or the other, there is evil in any given day that we must stand against. Some days worse than others, but there is no shortage of evil any given day. That’s why Jesus in Matthew 6:34 said (paraphrasing) while it is today, deal with what you’ve got to deal with, don’t worry about tomorrow.

Using it in that way, it is understandable why the verse 13 in Ephesians 6 says “having done all, stand”. At the end of the evil day, could be today, tomorrow, any day of the week, having on the Whole Armor of God will aid you in doing all to stand. And at the end of the day, while all the evils of the day are laid waste, you will be standing in the victory in Christ, wearing your Father’s Armor.

So take what the Lord has given us to use for defense and also offense. Take the Whole Armor of God and put it on. We are the children of the Most High God, and if the Lord says to put HIS Armor on, it’s so we can better serve him and shrug off all the attacks of the enemy.

The Belt of Truthwhat-is-truth-the-belt-of-truth-meaning

The Belt of Truth is the first piece of the Whole Armor of God mentioned, so we’ll start right off with it. Like the picture above, it may be so, that some people have a fragmented outlook on what truth really is (Biblically speaking). As far as the Belt of Truth goes, we’ll be able to determine exactly what the Word is talking about, and be able to place those missing pieces back into their place. First, let’s get a good idea of how the word Loins is being used.

Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth

Loins (Definition from Dictionary.com)

noun
1. Usually, loins. the part or parts of the human body or of a quadruped animal on either side of the spinal column, between the false ribs and hipbone.
2. a cut of meat from this region of an animal, especially a portion including the vertebrae of such parts.
3. the parts of the body between the hips and the lower ribs, especially regarded as the seat of physical strength and generative power. the genital and pubic area; genitalia.
Idioms
4. gird (up) one’s loins, to prepare oneself for something requiring readiness, strength, or endurance:
He girded his loins to face his competitor.

The Lord himself used the phrase above when he had it out with Job…

Job 38:

38 Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said, 2 Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge? 3 Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.

So understanding the definition of the word loins (a word most typical used in a deli nowadays), we can see that it means more than a belt that we use to hold up our pants. The Belt of Truth provides protection for your strongest and your most vulnerable quarters.

What is Truth?

searching-scripture-the-belt-of-truth-meaningAs Pilate said in John 18:37, “What is Truth?” I have carefully selected a bunch of scripture concerning truth. Truth is spoken about all over the place in the Bible, but there is something more specific that is involved when it comes down to the Belt of Truth. Read these verses and we’ll elaborate on what I’m talking about, and what I think many people might not realize.

Deuteronomy 32:

4 He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.

Let’s take this verse literally. The Father being the God of Truth suggests that Truth has a God. As if Truth is something more than things said, but perhaps an entity unto itself, serving his God who is God the Father. Sounds kinda weird but please bear with me for a few more verses before thinking I’m taking off into a strange direction or maybe lost some marbles.

Psalm 25:
5 Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.
Psalm 26:
3 For thy loving kindness is before mine eyes: and I have walked in thy truth.
Psalm 40:
11 Withhold not thou thy tender mercies from me, O Lord: let thy loving kindness and thy truth continually preserve me.
Psalm 54:
5 He shall reward evil unto mine enemies: cut them off in thy truth.
Psalm 57:
3 He shall send from heaven, and save me from the reproach of him that would swallow me up. Selah. God shall send forth his mercy and his truth.
Psalm 57:
10 For thy mercy is great unto the heavens, and thy truth unto the clouds.
Psalm 86:
11 Teach me thy way, O Lord; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name.
Psalm 96:
13 Before the Lord: for he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth.
Psalm 100:
5 For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.
All of these Old Testament verses reference HIS TRUTH. Not man’s truth, or not the act of honesty or being truthful (telling the truth), but refer to God’s Truth, not ours. Now look what happens as we are introduced to Christ in the flesh via the New Testament.
John 8:
32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
who-the-son-sets-free-the-belt-of-truth-meaning
He who the Son sets free is free indeed! Another tie to Christ as that Truth, as the Truth also sets us free!
Here we are again referring to Truth being as it’s own entity that belongs to God, instead of being used as an act of being truthful. This is Truth that belongs to God, his Truth. The same Truth that David spoke of in Psalms walking in, being lead by,  being preserved by, cuts off the wicked, the means by which the Lord will judge people by, and will endure throughout all generations.
Is this Truth person beginning to sound like anyone we know? Or better said, anyone that we should know? I’d propose that throughout the Old Testament when any verse directly refers to God’s truth as does the above verses, they are referring directly to Jesus, who was there in the beginning with God since before the foundations of the earth were laid.
And Here’s where Jesus makes his connection to all of those verses and so many more throughout the Old Testament:
John 14:
6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
John 14:
17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
John 16:
13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
John 17:
17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
So in all this we can gather with certainty that Jesus is the truth that is mentioned as being God’s own. And also the Spirit of Truth, would be the Holy Ghost, which doesn’t testify of himself, but of Christ. So when we’re talking about Truth that belongs to God, we’re not talking about being honest though God is honest and wills for us to be also. We’re not talking about the absence of lies, though God is indeed without any lies nor has any need or desire to lie (Numbers 23:19, 1 Samuel 15:29).

Fresh Understanding into the Belt of Truth

acts-1711-the-belt-of-truth-meaningWhose armor are we talking about equipping ourselves with? Is it our own? No, not our own (unless it makes you feel safer for some reason walking around town in a suit of armor… Maybe an updated version made from Kevlar). Either way, that is useless when dealing with things happening at a spiritual level.

It’s not ours or any man’s, but it’s God’s Armor. The Whole Armor of God is the Father’s Armor, given to us to better be able to stand in the evil day, against all of the things that come at us spiritually both on a daily basis, and also more out of the ordinary events that may come in time. So the attributes of every single piece are things that come directly from the Father, not us.

The Belt of Truth doesn’t make us more truthful, cause for us to be more honest, know truth any better, etc.. It is God’s Truth with witch we equip ourselves. And literally, we’re talking about girding our loins, our most sensitive quarters, which is also the seat of our strength with Christ Jesus, who IS Truth. This understanding may help clarify other verses found in the New Testament.

Romans 13:

14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lusts thereof.

Galatians 3:

27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

Conclusion

After reading this study, maybe it’s become clear why the Holy Spirit directed Paul to pen in the Belt of Truth first, instead of being the third or fifth in the list of each piece of God’s Armor. Is not Christ suppose to come first in our lives? Is he not to increase in our eyes and ourselves and all others suppose to decrease? The belt of Truth is the equivalent of equipping yourself with Christ Jesus for defense against all of the wiles of the Devil, keeping safe your most sensitive and strongest parts. Also this is the piece in which all other pieces of the Whole Armor of God hinge together.

Stay mindful of this when you pray, and when you equip yourselves with God’s Armor, stay mindful that as far as the Belt of Truth is concerned, you are putting on Christ Jesus. Take a good look at what God’s Truth is capable of in the Old Testament, and you’ll get just how powerful of a weapon this could be, so for us, it is given as an item of spiritual defense, not offense. All the power is concentrated on keeping us safe, not doing damage offensively.

Thank you for reading this study into the Whole Armor of God! I hope it’s helped you out in your understanding of what the Lord is telling us to do for our own sake concerning being spiritually and supernaturally equipped to do all to stand in the evil day. He’s given us the Word, he’s given us his Spirit, he’s given us his Armor, and he gave for us and has also given to us, his Son. Praise the Lord!

  1. I am so blessed even in the midst of physical suffering. My quiet time has led me to new revelations and I thank you for the teachings! Yes, the Truth will set us all free…that is Christ Jesus!

    • Hi Heidi,
Thanks for your comment. And Amen, it’s the truth of Christ, and also Christ himself as he IS the Truth (way, truth, life). God wants us to be honest because he is honest. He wants for us to be truthful because he is truthful. But the Belt of Truth stands for a truth that we’ve never been able to handle being fallen man. Only Jesus is qualified to become an actual protective element via truth. And as you stated, it’s that truth of Christ that sets us free!!! Praise Jesus!
PS… May the Lord restore you to exactly how he created you to be in the name of Jesus, when it is pleasing for him to do so! God bless you and thanks again for your comment.

  2. Outstanding! Just “yep.” Nothing left to say.
I did notice the outside links. Chuck Missler being one of the link certainly says something. Powerhouse.
I pray this message reaches the ears that will hear.

    • Wow thank you Brother! I appreciate that, and Chuck is truly a one of a kind information scientist/Christian scholar combo, which leads to direct, literal, precise and exhaustive Biblical insight via the Holy Ghost. I did hear Dr. Missler call it the piece that links all the rest together, but I didn’t have a very good understanding on exactly how deep the meaning was behind that statement till I began this study!
Thank you for your comment and God bless you! I’d like to recommend anyone who’s visiting to go over and check out James’s Truth in Christ website and check out all of the great things he’s got going on over there!
