The Breastplate of Righteousness is what immediately follows the Belt of Truth in Ephesians 6:14, so in the same fashion that the Apostle Paul wrote it, that’s how we’ll continue on with this study. We have a boatload of scripture to cover in this study and I pray that you carefully read each one concerning the topic at hand. Not just on this page, but take the time to find them in your Bible!
The Word of God is quick and powerful, so is the Armor that he gave us to wear as described in his Word! All of the extra scripture is placed into this post to bolster our understanding of the different attributes of this piece of armor and what it means to the Father as well as what it should mean to us. Let’s move right along into the study of the Breastplate, and see where the Lord takes us with it.
Ephesians 6 14-18
14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; 15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: 18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
This chapter in Ephesians is not the only place that we can find the Breastplate of Righteousness. As it is a piece of God’s Armor, we can find a place that the Lord himself is wearing it in Isaiah.
For he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and an helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloak.
There is a mention of the Breastplate of Righteousness along with the Helmet of Salvation (which we’ll be covering on another page). Take a note that the Lord is wearing something in this verse that is not available to us. The Garment of Vengeance is something that the Father has reserved for himself only, and he makes it perfectly clear to us through his Word.
19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.
The Lord has reserved vengeance for himself, because he is the only one qualified to dish it out. It is his;it literally belongs to him, and there is a day of vengeance that is coming that will be dished out against all the ungodly. (Isaiah 61:2, Isaiah 63:4, Jeremiah 46:10)

4. a plate opposite the chuck end of a breast drill against which the operator’s chest is placed.
The breastplate covers your heart and keeps it protected from a frontal assault. It also covers all of your other organs in the surrounding area that keeps your body’s mechanics in order. God’s Word says all kinds of things about the heart of a man, and how the Lord measures us by the content of our hearts.
Since this is such an important spiritual place as well as physical, it would be prudent to check out scriptures that concern the heart and what the Lord wills to protect via his Breastplate of Righteousness. We’ll also get a peek into what the Lord is looking for when he searches our heart.
29 O that there were such an heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their children for ever!

The best way I’ve heard it said concerning the word righteousness as far as we go as believers is that righteousness is a person being in good standing with God; Or in right standing; Living agreeably with God’s commandments and fulfilling the way he has instructed us to be.
Not too many people in the Bible lived up to the expectations where God himself would call someone righteous, but there were some. Righteous in no way means perfect, but is weighed by one’s heart toward the Father. It is not our righteousness anymore that the Lord is concerned about after the resurrection of his Son, but when he looks upon us, he wants to see the righteousness of his Son Jesus residing in our hearts.
18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
2 Corinthians 5:
21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
So we have been made the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus, but only in Christ Jesus. So when the Lord looks at us he looks upon the righteousness which we’ve received by his grace in Christ, not any righteousness that we’ve accumulated by our own works or actions. So we have the benefit of that as we are in Christ Jesus, but here, concerning the Breastplate of Righteousness, we need to realize something. It’s not our armor, and the attributes therein are not ours, but God’s.
There are literally hundreds of verses that talk about righteousness, but as far as the Breastplate is concerned, we need to take a look at HIS righteousness, not our own. It is the righteousness of the Lord that permeates through this particular piece of the Whole Armor of God, so here are several verses that consist of his righteousness.
8 Lead me, O Lord, in thy righteousness because of mine enemies; make thy way straight before my face.
17 I will praise the Lord according to his righteousness: and will sing praise to the name of the Lord most high.
3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
5 He shall receive the blessing from the Lord, and righteousness from the God of his salvation.
1 In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed: deliver me in thy righteousness.
24 Judge me, O Lord my God, according to thy righteousness; and let them not rejoice over me.
10 O continue thy loving kindness unto them that know thee; and thy righteousness to the upright in heart.
2 Deliver me in thy righteousness, and cause me to escape: incline thine ear unto me, and save me.
13 Before the Lord: for he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth.
1 Hear my prayer, O Lord, give ear to my supplications: in thy faithfulness answer me, and in thy righteousness.
33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
It’s HIS righteousness that dramatically changes every circumstance that causes him to move on our behalf. He carefully watches over his Word in order to perform it. That is God’s righteousness. So when he makes a promise in his Word, and we as Born Again believers in Christ adhere to those promises and bring them to his remembrance in prayer and supplication, he is faithful to hear and to do that which he says he’ll do.
Breastplate of Righteousness: Function
So to pull all of this information together, the Breastplate of Righteousness has a two fold function for us who have made the decision to put it on daily for constant protection, bringing into our remembrance it’s reality. As I like to say, do all things in remembrance of Christ. This is no exception.
This piece of Armor is recorded in the Old Testament to have been worn by God and is certainly his. It covers and protects the vital organs of the body and the part of our makeup that matters most to the Father, which is the heart. It shields us from oncoming assaults from the evil one, particularly when it comes to stealing planted seed from your heart, which could be a whole range of different things (wisdom, understanding, peace, scripture, etc..). But not just that, but any spiritual attack from the enemy that attacks that area.
The second function would be the fact that it’s God’s righteousness that we’re wearing! It’s that aspect that I think people are less aware of. This is the function that works in tandem with the Sword of the Spirit, and in praying always with all prayer and supplication. This is the key ingredient because it’s this very righteousness, the righteousness of God, that moves him in his faithfulness to do what he says he’ll do.
He is not a man that he should lie, so anything that he says he’ll do in his Word (whatever the case may be) he’ll do it. Not necessarily for our sake or because of our righteousness, but for his Word’s sake, his name’s sake, and for his own righteousness sake. This is yet another reason for all of us to be well versed in scripture,to know what the Lord is willing to do on our behalf if we invite him to do so.
So up to this point we’ve learned the importance of wearing the Whole Armor of God. We’ve studied and walked away with an understanding of putting on the Belt of Truth (which is Christ Jesus who IS truth). Now we better understand what it means to put on the Breastplate of Righteousness (God’s Righteousness). And we better understand why each of these are important to each particular area of our spiritual makeup.
Looking ahead, we’ll be moving forward with the Boots of Peace (having your feet shod with the Gospel of Peace), and will reveal what this piece of spiritual equipment is used for and why. I hope you check it out in the link below.
