Proverbs 20: King James Bible
Cease from Strife – Daily Devotion of Proverbs chapter twenty, Verse 3
3 It is an honor for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.
Daily Inspiration from These Verses – Cease from Strife
Do people really consider it an honorable act when they cease from strife? Any time I’ve done so, honor is the last thing on my mind. In reality, I’m typically thinking of all the things that I could say or do.
Yes, it would seem right in my eyes to continue on with the strife, at least for a time. But in reality, all I’m doing is gratifying the flesh, and doing what’s right in my own eyes, or righting something that appears to be a wrong, by way of pride, temper, whatever.
During these circumstances, nobody feels that they are in the wrong, otherwise, they’d do whatever makes them feel better, right? Nobody strives t be wrong that I know of.
But whether you’re right, wrong, or otherwise, if you are taking part in strife, there’s no honor in it, and after crossing the threshold into strife, there is nothing but foolishness. How often after the fact, have I wished I just kept my mouth shut on several occasions, but didn’t.
A person who has the wherewithal to withstand getting mingled into strifes of any kind, is honorable in my book, as it is so difficult for many of us to do. For someone to look ahead and realize that if they continue down a particular path, they’ll be meddling with things that they shouldn’t be, is a great trait to have, and is where I believe the Lord is steering us with this verse.
“It is an honor for a man to cease from strife…” Stay out of it, recognize it as a means to create strife, avoid it, look past it or through it, and the Lord calls it an honor.
The person that can do that might not feel like it’s an honor at the time, but if they had a clue of all the mess that they’ve avoided by staying free from strife, they’d certainly understand they’ve been honored.
After thinking on this for awhile, I found it difficult to remove our mouths from the equation, as it relates to what kicks off a bout of strife. Someone says something to get the ball rolling. We can be the ones who wind up being the culprit, or we can respond to the culprit in kind.
But the Lord gives us a third option. To be wise in our words and deeds, and not to fall for any snare that the enemy may lay before us, including using the divisive tactics of strife. Fools revel in it, and the wicked promote it. The Father would rather us be removed from it’s bite.
Retain your honor and learn if you must, that ignoring the flesh’s desire to get tangled up in strife, is far more beneficial than anything you could either say or do while striving against another. You don’t get anything done beating against the wind.

13 Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.
1 Corinthians 3:
3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?
19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
Thank you for your Word, and for your lessons tucked inside of it. Help us Lord, to avoid being a cause for strife, and for taking part in it. Stir up our remembrance of this verse , so that we may recall ahead of time, that it is an honor for us to cease from strife, rather than having to deal with it’s aftermath. This we pray in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Ever notice how bad the flesh wants to get involved in folly, rather than to cease from strife?
