Daily Inspiration from These Verses – Chastening Betimes

Having read the scripture above, I’d be willing to bet, that you might think that this devotional will be all about parenting. Am I close?

Well, though this is addressing a crucial parenting tool we call discipline, I’m going to take this verse into a different direction. Before we do that, let’s take a look at the last word in the verse above, which is the word betimes.

Betimes is a fancy way to say early, or before an expected time. In other words, discipline your child when they’re on the lawn heading toward the street. Not after he’s already in the street, and already in danger.

There’s something to be said about chastening betimes. The key ingredient, in order to even be able to do this, is the attention required to catch something beginning to brew, rather than when there’s already a problem. There isn’t much you can do betimes, early, ahead of schedule, or before it’s too late, without paying meaningful attention. This doesn’t just go for parenting, but for virtually anything meaningful. But I digress…

What I would like to focus on here, is a fact that we tend to forget. We are the sons and daughters of Father God. Take this verse, and look at it from a child’s point of view.

What we’ll be able to see once we get that mindset, is that the Father is explaining himself a bit. It blows my mind a little, whenever we can see the Father explaining his actions, as if he ever had to! He certainly owes us nothing, let alone an explanation. I mean, he’s the Creator of all the Universe, and whatever is beyond that.

It’s his love for us, and his grace and meekness, that he wants us to know why he does certain things. Have you ever asked the Lord while in the midst of trouble,”Why me?” I’m guilty of that more often than I’d like to admit. I believe that this verse is the Father answering that two word question.

Don’t get confused. The Father’s chastening is far different than us coming under spiritual attack, persecution, or temptation. The Father tempts nobody. These things come from anything between the flesh, to the world, to Satan and his cohorts.

If the Father gives us a preemptive chastening, it is always to keep us from harm, ahead of a crossing a point of no return, or beyond possibility of corrective recourse. The Father would rather grab us sharply by the hand before we fall into a bog, instead of having to pull us out of the bog. Less physical or spiritual clean up when you think of it that way.

So when you seem to be having trouble that you don’t believe you deserve, take a close examination. You may just find yourself going through chastening of the Lord, and the right thing to do if that’s the case, is to praise him & thank him.

If he didn’t love you as his own child, he’d never have stopped you from whatever it is he’s foreseen that will cause you either physical harm or spiritual / emotional difficulties. Personally, I don’t think we’ll have any idea, how often the Father has kept us from a spiderweb of deep seeded problems, by way of his chastening betimes.

Thank you for your Word, and as always Father, help us to apply all your Word, and incorporate it into our lives. Your Word is life, and health to our bones. If ever you should see the need to discipline or chasten us Lord, please do so, and make it clear to us, the message that you are trying to get across, so that we’re not stiff necked toward your instruction and correction. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ we pray.

Where do you think you would be right now, were it not for the Lord’s attention, and chastening betimes?
