Proverbs 13: King James Bible

Companion of Fools – Daily Devotion of Proverbs chapter thirteen, Verses 19-21

19 The desire accomplished is sweet to the soul: but it is abomination to fools to depart from evil. 20 He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed. 21 Evil pursueth sinners: but to the righteous good shall be repaid.

Daily Inspiration from These Verses – Companion of Fools

Like many verses we’ll find in Proverbs, the sentences are broken between two types of people. On the one side we’ve got foolish sinners, and on the other side, we’ve got the wise righteous.

And as we’ve spoken about many times, the Lord has made it perfectly clear, which side he’s like to find us on. Of course, it would be on the side of the wise righteous. It is on that road, that he has placed his favor, his blessings, and his guidance. For those who have Christ Jesus, this is the way that leads to life.

We’ve also discussed in prior devotionals, that this world has a different plan for us than the Lord does. It is diametrically opposed to the will of the Father for our lives. Instead of being lead into the blessings of the Lord, the world leads us away from those blessings, and into darkness.

It’s in that darkness, that we stumble, fall, mess up, sin without a thought, and despite the silver lining that the world would lead you to believe exists, there is none. For those who do not have Christ Jesus, this is the way that leads to death.

The verses above also take the focus off of us just a little, and on to those who we keep company with. I’ve said it before, we’re known by the friends we keep. If you’re wise, and keep the company of a bunch of fools, you’ll be seen as just as much of a fool as the rest of them. Foolishness is often contagious.

On the other hand, a fool that hands around with a bunch of wise people will be assumed as wise, because of being associated with them. Also, wisdom rubs off on people, just as an abundance of foolishness rubs off on people.

If you hang around with wise people, you’ll be all the better for it. Hang around with foolish people, and it will be to your hurt in one way or the other. Personally, I’ve been on both sides of the issue. I can tell you, it’s far better to be associated with the wise, than it is to be associated with the foolish.

God knows what he’s talking about, and has gone through great lengths, to make this walk through life as easy as possible. That doesn’t mean easy, but as is possible. We do our fair share of botching things up without any help from anyone else. Right?

If we stick to the Word of the Lord, and seek his counsel, make a point to be wise in as many ways as we know how, and keep company of those who may be wiser than ourselves, life is much easier to traverse.

But to ignore or forget the Word of the Lord, refuse his counsel, and keep the company of people that tend to lead you into darkness, you’ll find that life gets far more difficult than it ought to be.

1 Corinthians 5: King James Bible

9 I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators: 10 Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world.

Ephesians 1: King James Bible

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: 4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:

5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, 6 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.

Prayer

Father,

Thank you for your Word, and all of the treasure that you’ve placed inside it. Thank you for leading us, as we search out those treasures, and apply them to our daily lives. Lead us always Father, to make wise decisions, according to your will and your word, and to be a light shining brightly in this world of darkness. For the sake of your kingdom and to play our part, in leading others out of darkness. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ we pray.

Amen
