Covetousness – Daily Devotion of Proverbs chapter twenty eight, Verses 15-16
15 As a roaring lion, and a ranging bear; so is a wicked ruler over the poor people. 16 The prince that wanteth understanding is also a great oppressor: but he that hateth covetousness shall prolong his days.
Daily Inspiration from These Verses – Covetousness
In the two verses above, it appears that a common thread between a prince who lacks understanding and a wicked ruler is oppression fueled by covetousness.We learned earlier on in a devotion called “Oppressing the Poor,” what covetousness can do in the hands of someone with power, who is willing to do all in order to avoid suffering personal lack.
Every form of legitimate government takes something from its citizens. Without doing so, it can’t function. The only one that I can think of where there isn’t a tax of some kind, would be the Kingdom of Heaven, where we’re actually promised things upon arrival, rather than paying a tax or paying tribute to the King. Our price for entry was paid on the cross 2,000 years ago.
It would be a hard sell for anyone to try to come up with reasons why the Lord needs taxes paid in Heaven, right? Especially when gold is as good as pavement. But, I’ll bet that there will be some sort of tax when Jesus comes back to rule from the throne of David in Jerusalem. We’ll see.
However, because he is just, we can anticipate that his rule will be just and righteous. Someone who doesn’t just have it all, but created it all, would have a hard time being covetous. So until then, we need to deal with people who are more prone to be covetous.
If there was ever a time in US history where the light is exposing wickedness in high places of our government, it would be these days that we are living in right now. And at the time of this writing, I can assure that what we see happening in Washington D.C. right now is only the tip of the iceberg.
I am thoroughly convinced that those who are screaming the loudest in the capital right now, are those who are the closest to being caught and tried for the things that they’ve done while holding their various offices. That isn’t saying that our current administration is so good, but rather cover for wrongdoing given by previous administrations is being removed. In other words, those who would continue the ‘business as usual’ way of running things, allowing people to get away with all kinds of abominable activity are not running the show. May all things that are hidden in darkness bear witness to the light and become exposed!
Covetousness. Covetousness can sway those who should be unswayable, and corrupt those who deem themselves uncorruptible. It can cause for people to do things proportionately wicked to the object of whatever it is that they are coveting.
The more covetous those who are above are, the more taken and exploited from those beneath. There is no justice in covetousness. It’s fuel is a mingling of greed, selfishness, and pride that blinds those who harbor it. Even to the extent that people would literally sacrifice their children (or someone else’s) in order to acquire a desire.
No people want a wicked ruler to rule over them as a roaring lion or a ranging bear. But as Ambassadors of Christ, do we spend enough time in prayer concerning whatever nation we live in? Some would argue that it’s not our job to do so, I would argue the opposite. I’d further argue that it is our responsibility to do so, as we currently occupy this place till we wither go by way of the grave, or the King of Kings returns. Whichever happens first.

Thank you for your Word, and for being a just and righteous King over your people. We eagerly await the return of Christ Jesus, and ask that until then, that all unrighteousness be cleansed and removed from our governments, be they local federal or state, whatever the case may be. May all the wicked who hide themselves in the shadows be discovered, and may all things that are hidden in darkness, be brought to the light, exposed, removed, and tried against the laws of our country. May every abomination and foul person and thing be plucked out of the places of authority over your children Lord, and replace them with good and just people who will not fall into temptations that come with their offices. Led by your guiding hand. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ we pray.
