Daily Inspiration from This Verse – Love not Sleep
Sleep is generally only good for one thing, and that the body. Unless you’re getting paid to be a sleep clinic test subject, the only thing that profits from it is the flesh.
Now the Father can at times communicate with us in our dreams, as we see happening with Daniel, Joseph, and others. But that’s at his discretion, not ours. As we’ve discovered through these devotionals, the Lord calls for us to be active.
I’m reminded of the verse that screams, “Awake you sluggard!” Well alright, maybe it only screams at me. Some of us are slower learners than others. I am a lover of sleep from a certain point of view.
On the one hand, should I have my druthers, I’d want to be up at the crack of dawn every day. Until I finally get to sleep, and once I’m there, waking up is the last thing my body wants to do. At times, it’s been only of sheer willpower that I’ve gotten up on time for things at all.
I have been diagnosed with a sleeping disorder, that makes it so my body is on a 36 hour schedule instead of a regular 24 hour schedule (try wrapping your mind around that for a second). When I’m awake, I’m awake for a long time. But when I sleep, my body wants to give Rip Van Winkle a run for his money.
So having a regular daily schedule is extremely difficult for any longer than a few days. Who cares? Well, I said all of that to say this…
The Lord has given us a will that has the potential to be strong. Being strong willed is only a good thing depending on what we’re being strong willed about. Were it not for a strong will to override my foolish flesh when I need to get up for something, then I promise you, poverty would have come upon me as an armed man.
Sleeping is something that we should look at as a necessity, or a means to an end. But when we love sleep, and choose to chuck the alarm clock to make it shut up, trouble is never far. I can promise you that. Yes it’s an odd thing, but has been proven true in my life, and I’ll bet there are others of you out there that can testify, that loving to sleep will ruin the rest of your day.
Spiritually speaking, being asleep is dangerous all by itself. But just so happens to be the general state of spiritual being for Christians and non-Christians alike.
If you’re spiritually asleep, you are missing what the Lord has planned for you, and you are also oblivious to the plans that the enemy has for you. Of the two, only one will take advantage of your spiritually sleepy state, and that’s the enemy.
Awake O sleeper, arise from the dead, and Christ shall give you light!

Romans 13: King James Bible
10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. 11 And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. 12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.
1 Corinthians 15: King James Bible
33 Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners. 34 Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame.
Ephesians 5: King James Bible
14 Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.
Thank you for being there always, through thick and thin. Thank you for your Word, and for all of the strength we can gain from it. We praise you and love you, not for what you’ve done or are going to do, but simply because you are you, and it is you that first loved us, despite our sin and our foolishness. We lift you up Father, as you are indeed above all. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ we pray.
