Favor from God – Daily Devotion of Proverbs chapter three, Verses 3-4
3 Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: 4 So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.
Daily Inspiration from These Verses
In these two verses, we have another example of “if you do this, you get that.” So what are we being instructed to do?
- Don’t let mercy and truth forsake you
- Bind mercy and truth about your neck
- Write mercy and truth upon your heart
Does the opening statement of these two verses imply that mercy and truth can actually forsake us? Yes it does, and sure they can.
Forsake means to “abandon” or to “give up on” a person or thing. We discussed this in part 8 called Fear and Desolation, where the Father gives warning about us forcing him to back off.
He’s telling us not to let them forsake us. Don’t allow yourself to land in a position where you’ve let go of the truth, and fall for a lie. Don’t let yourself be blown around to and fro by every wind of doctrine, doing what will cancel out the Father’s favor in our lives.
Everyone wants favor from the Lord, yet not everyone is willing to do what it takes to please the Father in the first place. Maybe the word “willing” isn’t always the case, but rather “deceived” might come into play, as some double minded folks may adhere to something that comes crosswise with sound doctrine from the Word of God.
We reap what we sow. God is merciful to the merciful, and if you feel as though you may not be receiving much mercy from the Father, perhaps it would be wise to take an assessment of your heart. Could it be that you aren’t too merciful to those around you?
The Lord would rather grant us favor in all that we set our hand to do. It’s his will that none should perish. Were it not the case, he’d not give us any chance to gain favor in his sight, and cause for his hand of blessing to give us favor, or an edge over the world.
If we follow his instructions above, we find favor and a good understanding, with God (which is what it’s all about) and man.

Prayer – Favor from God
There are so many things that are trying to convince us to allow truth and mercy to slip away, equip us Lord, to hold fast to that which is good. Please keep us always mindful of your instruction, teach us to bind mercy and truth to ourselves, and to be written upon our hearts forever. Keep us inside your precious will, and grant us favor in all we set our hand to do. All through the power of your Holy Spirit, and in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ we pray.
Have you ever heard a doctrine that excludes mercy and truth, yet claims to provide a path for favor from God?
