Daily Inspiration from These Verses

This verse introduces a word that, up to this point of the book of Proverbs, hasn’t yet mentioned. I’d consider this a consequence, or result of holding tight to the “Wisdom of the Lord.”

Prudence

via Dictionary.com

noun
1. the quality or fact of being prudent, or wise in practical affairs, as by providing for the future.
2. caution with regard to practical matters; discretion.
3. regard for one’s own interests.
4. provident care in the management of resources; economy; frugality.

We’ll touch on the matter of prudence for this devotional, as the word “Prudent” is mentioned 12 times in future chapters of Proverbs. After reading this definition, we should meld this as an intention of the Father, as it relates to his will for the course of our lives. Also, considering wisdom and prudence dwell together, one comes with the other.

He wants to be involved in our plans for the future, which is a sure bet for us, considering he knows exactly what the future holds. We’d be wise to do all to figure out what we (individually speaking) need to do, to make sure we’re put in our proper place, smack dab in the center of his perfect will.

We’ve spoken about discretion in a previous devotional. And through discretion, we avoid unnecessary problems on every level. Here, we see it used concerning practical matters, falling under the jurisdiction of prudence.

Prudence as it relates to our own well being is very important. Not in a selfish manner, but to instead be in a position to be able to help someone out, instead of being the one needing the help. For some Biblical background of what I just stated, refer to what Jesus says about first removing the plank from our own eye, then deal with the spec in someone else’s (paraphrasing).

Through the wisdom of the Father, one is able to plan ahead, for things that might not be so obvious to anyone else. The Holy Ghost knows the witty inventions that lie ahead, that the enemy may have set up against you.

He also is willing to give us some witty inventions of our own! This may be to further his cause, or to put you in a better position, to further his cause. Should it be any surprise, that the Holy Ghost is full of good ideas?

To sum it all up, we can take heart that the Father has included prudence into the benefits package that is entitled “Wisdom of the Lord.”

Ephesians 1: King James Bible

7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; 8 Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence; 9 Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:

Prayer

Father,

As we’ve asked you in the past, should we be found wanting in your eyes, please grant us the wisdom required to stay inside your perfect will, and the understanding to follow through and carry it out. Help us to maneuver prudently, according to the measure of wisdom you’ve given, so that we may be able to be as much of a blessing to those who’ll need to be blessed as possible. This we pray in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Amen
