Proverbs 1: King James Bible
1 The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel; 2 To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding; 3 To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity; 4 To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.
Daily Inspiration from These Verses
There are four things that King Solomon wants for us to grasp in the words above.
- To Know
- To Perceive
- Words of Understanding
- To Receive instruction of
- To Give
We’re All Found Wanting
Who among us has a firm handle on all four of those line items above? I know I don’t. So what I would suggest for this devotional, is to reflect on that list above, and see which you’re lacking in.
There is one behavior though, that will limit your ability to grow in the Word of God, and that would be pride. Pride will ruin any chances of increase in any of the areas above, no matter which it is.
Pride is the original sin, and for many it’s the most difficult to deal with. Present company included by the way…
We aren’t as wise as the Father by any stretch of the imagination. The book of Proverbs has a lesson for us in every line that can help us out in our walk.
You could read a chapter a day, and always find something new, or the Lord has opened up your understanding to see verses in a different light.
All of those line items above are the direct purpose of the book of Proverbs, so it would serve us all greatly to spend time chewing on a verse or two, and really chew on it slow like a fine meal.

Help us all to grow where you find us lacking. Help us to know wisdom and instruction; to perceive words of understanding; to be receptive to your instruction concerning wisdom, justice, judgement, and equity; and give us subtilty, knowledge, and discretion as we move throughout our day.
Thank you Lord, in Jesus name I pray…
Alright folks, fess up in the comments below!
Of all that’s been discussed, which do you feel that you may be lacking in?
I’ll go first, taking liberty here to answer that question for myself.
As far as I go: All of them!
