Demons in the Bible are covered in the Old Testament and also the New. Since we’ve already covered one in the Old Testament, let’s get into a situation that took place in the days that Jesus walked the earth. Since the Old Testament reference was somewhat obscure, I’ll take one of the most well known accounts in the Bible to pick from the New Testament. This account is found in Mark chapter 5, and also in Luke 8. For our purposes we’ll go with Luke’s account.
Demoniac of Gadara
27 And when he went forth to land, there met him out of the city a certain man, which had devils long time, and ware no clothes, neither abode in any house, but in the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God most high? I beseech thee, torment me not.
29 (For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness.)
30 And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him. 31 And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep.
32 And there was there an herd of many swine feeding on the mountain: and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them. And he suffered them. 33 Then went the devils out of the man, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were choked.
Scriptural Breakdown – Demonic Behavior
The first thing that I would like to point out right off the bat, is the fact that the person possessed came running to Jesus as soon as he got off of the boat. Very interesting thing to think about. In fact, whenever there is a demon cast out of anyone in the New Testament, the demonically possessed are the ones that wind up being brought to Jesus, or like in this account, just seem to show up.
Jesus didn’t knock on doors or go out to seek people that needed deliverance. As soon as Jesus stepped foot on to the shore this guy came running. But I think in this case they wound up with a rude awakening.
Now why would demonic entities come running to a group of believers? Keep in mind that it wasn’t just Jesus, but he and the twelve disciples. What I believe is they are probably commanded to do so by their “would be king” Satan.
Don’t forget, the Devil isn’t concerned too much with people that he’s already got his hooks into. But like any prideful, spoiled, defeated, narcissistic, paranoid schizophrenic with an ax to grind, he wants to wipe out all competition or threat to his worldly empire, and strives to damage the population of Heaven (or at that time the Paradise side of Sheol). Especially in those days when he could smell his own defeat coming, but didn’t know how it was suppose to play out.
Satan operates much like the Mafia. Because he can’t hurt God Almighty, he gets to him through attempting to destroy his family. Meaning us. If he can’t destroy God, the creation is his target. All of it.
So when they see someone being lead by the Spirit of God, they come running. Either spiritually so they can do their deeds with less potential of getting called out and dealt with properly, or physically via someone who they’re inhabiting. Just try to get your life straight with God, you’ll see them coming from a mile away when the Holy Spirit is at work in you.
But we also have Christ in us, assuming that you’ve been Born Again, the same Christ who was on the scene in the verses above. Look at what his presence did to that man (the demonic horde inside him). They fell at his feet and begged not to be tormented! Now why do we as believers get so sheepish about these things when we have Christ Jesus dwelling inside us all the time?
Demonic Torment on the Body
I’ll take from the scriptures what the demons had been doing to this guy. Clearly, they had complete control of him.
There met him out of the city a certain man, which had devils long time: I am going to take liberty here, but I’d assume since the demons had been afflicting this man for a long time, there was a time that he was not possessed. Safe to assume right? There was something at some point earlier in his life where he either made a decision, got involved with something, or maybe had a generational curse, that left a window open that allowed it all to begin.
and ware no clothes: Yeah that’s pretty interesting too. Good thing that never happens anymore…

neither abode in any house, but in the tombs: Dwelling among the dead. I wish that I could remember where I read about this, but I can’t. So take this with a grain of salt, and if I find the resource, I’ll amend this part. But I did read somewhere that there was evidence, or mention in a local writing of the day, of this man eating the remains of the corpses that were in the tombs. Interesting, but like I said, take it with a grain of salt. If there is anyone reading this that has that resource available please let me know in a comment or an e-mail, so I can amend this part.
For oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness: Oftentimes does not mean all the time, it means often. There were periods of time that this man may have been in his right mind. That may explain how others were able to get the guy in shackles and chains in the first place.
He broke the bands, so there was some extra strength involved. If the people wanted to keep the man locked up, it’s unlikely that the bands were something easily broken by even the strongest of men.

I could compile quite a list of incidences of crazed people doing violent things exhibiting super human strength, much like the list above, but thought I’d only give a few. Many are of course drug related. In many cases, people who are on certain types of drugs can achieve “super human strength”. But what many either don’t believe or don’t know is that doing these drugs opens up the door to all kinds of demonic activity, and eventually possession. It is no coincidence that someone possessed acting out because of the demon surfacing, resembles the same characteristics of someone who is on different types of drugs.
Why can someone behave as a completely different person under the influence of drugs or alcohol? Why do people wind up doing things that they would never otherwise do? And the kicker is, why is it always something that is more sinful or wicked than what they would do otherwise? It’s always something bad. Becoming more willing to do something stupid, get into fights, spout off at the mouth, rob, steal, or kill, etc.. Demons thrive in the drug and alcohol community. So I guess we shouldn’t be too shocked when someone demonically influenced is caught behaving demonically, being demonically controlled by way of drug abuse.
And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him: People often make the mistake of calling a demon Legion. Or if someone is delivered, and through the deliverance someone asks for a name, and lo and behold, it’s a demon called Legion. The Bible is pretty clear, that the demon who was the spokesman said that they were many. A Legion of demons, not a demon named Legion. It’s kind of a pet peeve of mine that some people get that mixed up. Sorry about that.
All that aside, there were many demons in that man, meaning that many can inhabit one person’s body. How that’s done is kinda tricky, and I’m sure will be covered in a future installment, but the focus is the fact that they were all cooped up in there. So, in certain circumstances if someone becomes possessed by one, that one may lead that person to do whatever is required to open another door for more to come in. And that process can continue right unto death if left alone.
They besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep – And there was there an herd of many swine feeding on the mountain: and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them: Demons are desperate to inhabit a body. They don’t have one and (I assume) that there must be a piece of their misery that is somewhat extinguished once they are in a body. Reading what they said, I mean, to me that’s pretty clear.
If they can’t set up shop in a human, they’d rather settle for an animal than be without a form. Please check out the previous installment of this series called Demons in the Bible – Old Testament. The “Night Terror” did not have a clear form that the person who was experiencing it could comprehend.
In this case they settled for the pigs. And perhaps this may be a testament to how smart pigs are, due to the fact that they’d rather jump off of a cliff than tolerate being harassed by demons. Or, perhaps it is a display that we can learn from, about how terrifying it would be to be forced into possession, having done nothing to provoke it.
Possession is most oftentimes possible by some sort of provocation. Not necessarily deliberately, but when they see their chance, they are always there to take it.
I hope that you are finding some sort of use for this information. Maybe to take notice of things that you’ve dealt with, perhaps see a few things in a different light, I don’t know.
