Demons in the Bible – New Testament

demons-in-the-biblent-demons-in-the-bible--new-testamentDemons in the Bible are covered in the Old Testament and also the New. Since we’ve already covered one in the Old Testament, let’s get into a situation that took place in the days that Jesus walked the earth. Since the Old Testament reference was somewhat obscure, I’ll take one of the most well known accounts in the Bible to pick from the New Testament. This account is found in Mark chapter 5, and also in Luke 8. For our purposes we’ll go with Luke’s account.

Demoniac of Gadara

Luke 8

27 And when he went forth to land, there met him out of the city a certain man, which had devils long time, and ware no clothes, neither abode in any house, but in the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God most high? I beseech thee, torment me not.

29 (For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness.)

30 And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him. 31 And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep.

32 And there was there an herd of many swine feeding on the mountain: and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them. And he suffered them. 33 Then went the devils out of the man, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were choked.

Scriptural Breakdown – Demonic Behavior

The first thing that I would like to point out right off the bat, is the fact that the person possessed came running deliverance-demons-in-the-bible--new-testamentto Jesus as soon as he got off of the boat. Very interesting thing to think about. In fact, whenever there is a demon cast out of anyone in the New Testament, the demonically possessed are the ones that wind up being brought to Jesus, or like in this account, just seem to show up.

Jesus didn’t knock on doors or go out to seek people that needed deliverance. As soon as Jesus stepped foot on to the shore this guy came running. But I think in this case they wound up with a rude awakening.

Now why would demonic entities come running to a group of believers? Keep in mind that it wasn’t just Jesus, but he and the twelve disciples. What I believe is they are probably commanded to do so by their “would be king” Satan.

Don’t forget, the Devil isn’t concerned too much with people that he’s already got his hooks into. But like any prideful, spoiled, defeated, narcissistic, paranoid schizophrenic with an ax to grind, he wants to wipe out all competition or threat to his worldly empire, and strives to damage the population of Heaven (or at that time the Paradise side of Sheol). Especially in those days when he could smell his own defeat coming, but didn’t know how it was suppose to play out.

Satan operates much like the Mafia. Because he can’t hurt God Almighty, he gets to him through attempting to destroy his family. Meaning us. If he can’t destroy God, the creation is his target. All of it.

So when they see someone being lead by the Spirit of God, they come running. Either spiritually so they can do their deeds with less potential of getting called out and dealt with properly, or physically via someone who they’re inhabiting. Just try to get your life straight with God, you’ll see them coming from a mile away when the Holy Spirit is at work in you.

But we also have Christ in us, assuming that you’ve been Born Again, the same Christ who was on the scene in the verses above. Look at what his presence did to that man (the demonic horde inside him).  They fell at his feet and begged not to be tormented! Now why do we as believers get so sheepish about these things when we have Christ Jesus dwelling inside us all the time?

Demonic Torment on the Body

legion-demons-in-the-bible--new-testamentI’ll take from the scriptures what the demons had been doing to this guy. Clearly, they had complete control of him.

There met him out of the city a certain man, which had devils long time: I am going to take liberty here, but I’d assume since the demons had been afflicting this man for a long time, there was a time that he was not possessed. Safe to assume right? There was something at some point earlier in his life where he either made a decision, got involved with something, or maybe had a generational curse, that left a window open that allowed it all to begin.

and ware no clothes: Yeah that’s pretty interesting too. Good thing that never happens anymore…

neither abode in any house, but in the tombs: Dwelling among the dead. I wish that I could remember where I read about this, but I can’t. So take this with a grain of salt, and if I find the resource, I’ll amend this part. But I did read somewhere that there was evidence, or mention in a local writing of the day, of this man eating the remains of the corpses that were in the tombs. Interesting, but like I said, take it with a grain of salt. If there is anyone reading this that has that resource available please let me know in a comment or an e-mail, so I can amend this part.

For oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness: Oftentimes does not mean all the time, it means often. There were periods of time that this man may have been in his right mind. That may explain how others were able to get the guy in shackles and chains in the first place.

He broke the bands, so there was some extra strength involved. If the people wanted to keep the man locked up, it’s unlikely that the bands were something easily broken by even the strongest of men.

I could compile quite a list of incidences of crazed people doing violent things exhibiting super human strength, much like the list above, but thought I’d only give a few. Many are of course drug related. In many cases, people who are on certain types of drugs can achieve “super human strength”. But what many either don’t believe or don’t know is that doing these drugs opens up the door to all kinds of demonic activity, and eventually possession. It is no coincidence that someone possessed acting out because of the demon surfacing, resembles the same characteristics of someone who is on different types of drugs.

Why can someone behave as a completely different person under the influence of drugs or alcohol? Why do people wind up doing things that they would never otherwise do? And the kicker is, why is it always something that is more sinful or wicked than what they would do otherwise? It’s always something bad. Becoming more willing to do something stupid, get into fights, spout off at the mouth, rob, steal, or kill, etc.. Demons thrive in the drug and alcohol community. So I guess we shouldn’t be too shocked when someone demonically influenced is caught behaving demonically, being demonically controlled by way of drug abuse.

And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him: People often make the mistake of calling a demon Legion. Or if someone is delivered, and through the deliverance someone asks for a name, and lo and behold, it’s a demon called Legion. The Bible is pretty clear, that the demon who was the spokesman said that they were many. A Legion of demons, not a demon named Legion. It’s kind of a pet peeve of mine that some people get that mixed up. Sorry about that.

All that aside, there were many demons in that man, meaning that many can inhabit one person’s body. How that’s done is kinda tricky, and I’m sure will be covered in a future installment, but the focus is the fact that they were all cooped up in there. So, in certain circumstances if someone becomes possessed by one, that one may lead that person to do whatever is required to open another door for more to come in. And that process can continue right unto death if left alone.

They besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep –  And there was there an herd of many swine feeding on the mountain: and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them: Demons are desperate to inhabit a body. They don’t have one and (I assume) that there must be a piece of their misery that is somewhat extinguished once they are in a body. Reading what they said, I mean, to me that’s pretty clear.

If they can’t set up shop in a human, they’d rather settle for an animal than be without a form. Please check out the someone-possessed-demons-in-the-bible--new-testamentprevious installment of this series called Demons in the Bible – Old Testament. The “Night Terror” did not have a clear form that the person who was experiencing it could comprehend.

In this case they settled for the pigs. And perhaps this may be a testament to how smart pigs are, due to the fact that they’d rather jump off of a cliff than tolerate being harassed by demons. Or, perhaps it is a display that we can learn from, about how terrifying it would be to be forced into possession, having done nothing to provoke it.

Possession is most oftentimes possible by some sort of provocation. Not necessarily deliberately, but when they see their chance, they are always there to take it.

I hope that you are finding some sort of use for this information. Maybe to take notice of things that you’ve dealt with, perhaps see a few things in a different light, I don’t know. But if you have been blessed by this, please come back and check for the next installment of this series Are Demons Real. I’ve got a few things in mind that the Lord has put on my heart for the next one, so please keep your eyes open & share via the share tab below. You just may bring someone here that needs to hear this stuff and recognize that there’s more going on around them than they think.

It would be better for you to get your hands on a Bible and follow along with all of this. Don’t take my word for anything. Get into the Word of God Almighty! If you don’t have a Bible, get one today HERE. Also, if you have a testimony that falls within this category, please let us all know about it in the comments section!

  1. An interesting read. Although an agnostic myself, the title caught my eye, which is why I decided to read through the piece. I think the whole topic of demons, especially when it comes to reading about demons in the bible, is subjective, in much the same way as heaven and hell are subjective and can mean different things to different people.

    • Hi Tony,

Thank you for your comment, and apologize for the tardy response. Been a bit hectic lately… Anyways..

The first thing that I feel compelled to tell you, is that whether or not demonic forces are real, it’s always more important that you find out that Jesus and God the Father are real. When you cross that threshold, and receive Jesus, the Holy Spirit opens your eyes to things that have been concealed in His Word. There’s no subjectivity in these things when it becomes just as real to you as the back of your hand.

But these same demonic forces actually promote taking black and white areas and making them several different bland shades of gray, causing for their very existence to be doubted. The fewer people that believe in them, the fewer people out there that know where to place blame when they have done something, and without properly diagnosing a problem, it festers and nothing is done about it.

Ultimately their goal is to cause people to believe in just about anything but the truth. Specifically, the Truth of Christ Jesus, and everything that he did for us so that we could have an eternity with him, instead of an eternity without him.

Thank you for your comment, and I pray that your journey leads you into the truth of Christ Jesus!

  2. Hey Bryan!
I find your site very interesting. I find it very crazy and confusing how people can call themselves christians, read the bible and somehow read past or dismiss the parts where it says demons are real. I think maybe a lot of scary movies gave the world a false image of demons and desesitized their awareness of them. My mom showed me this guy named John Ramirez who knows demons first hand. He used to be one of the highest satanic priest in New York, but then God got a hold of him and now he’s an evangelist. He has two books out and they are amazing! Check him out on youtube because it won’t let me post the link.

    • Hi there Megan,

Thank you for your comment. Yeah I know what you mean, you’d think that if they decide to believe in someone who has been raised from the dead, completed unreasonable miracles (water to wine, walking on water, healing, raising the dead, etc.), would go the extra inch it takes to believe what he was up against. In all of the numerous accounts of Jesus casting out devils (demons) from people, it wasn’t metaphoric, nor was the tumult that they’d make symbolic. He was actively casting out entities that were residing inside a person. And it wasn’t something meant for only him to do, as he had the apostles doing the same thing.

So I get what you’re saying, but it’s true. There are scores of people, Christians, who’d rather keep their heads in the sand and make believe that there’s no enemy out there holding their head in the dirt. We are not suppose to be spiritually passive by any means! That’s why the Lord had lead me to write about this in these blog posts, and also why he caused for me to write the book: Kingdom of Darkness in a Fallen World. To try to bring into people’s remembrance by who’s name that they profess to be called, yet they think themselves uncharged to do what he and the apostles did, and charged us to do.

Thank you again for your comment, and I’ll have to look up John Ramirez and check him out! Haven’t heard of him until now I believe… Unless he’s been on the Hagmann’s before, if he has been, I may have heard it, as what you say of him sounds familiar.

God bless you always in the name of Jesus!

  3. I can’t see how anyone that claims to be a Christian and knows the bible believe that demons aren’t real. I surely do. However, what I would love to hear your opinion on is whether or not you believe that all mental conditions are rooted in some kind of demon possession or at the least demon manipulation of some sort or no?

    • Hi there Shelly, thank you for the comment and your question. First, I can’t understand it either. However, it’s no secret that there are many people out there that call themselves a Christian and haven’t got a clue about what God’s Word says at all. God says that HIS people perish for lack of knowledge. He wasn’t talking about everyone, but was talking about his people.

Others don’t adhere to the idea that the Bible is the Word of God in total, picking and choosing what they wish to believe and adhere to and discard the rest that they don’t agree with. This comes from a mindset of working the Word to conform to what they believe, instead of conforming their beliefs to the Word of God.

Those reasons coupled with one thousand different doctrines out there that have been designed to create confusion in the Body of Christ. Many of which doesn’t refer to demonic forces as disembodied or angelic entities, but instead are broken down into either positive or negative energies. New Age Christianity is every bit of a campaign to keep our eyes closed to who the real enemy is as any other anti-Christian doctrine would be.

To answer your question about every mental illness… I would have to say right away that I have no idea. But I can say this; People have been afflicted with mental illnesses by demonic possession or interference in some way, and have been delivered and set free. There are (I’m sure) many cases that could be going on due to generational curses and demonic ties that haven’t been severed. Does that hold true with everyone? I really don’t know, but I’d not cancel it out. Does the Lord have the wherewithal to heal these people? I’d say absolutely, no matter the cause.

Thanks again for your comment and God bless you in the name of Jesus!

  4. This website is dope! It is really intresting stuff you take up here and I mean noone can say that deamons don´t exist because noone knows… But when you look at these examples listed here and the MANY crazy things going on today on our planet… Well it could actually explain a lot… Thanks for this intresting website… Hope you keep posting! / John

    • Hi there John, this was the third of what is now a 13 part series concerning this subject. It gets even weirder so you may enjoy it. lol. Truth is actually a whole lot stranger than fiction! Just click on the Are Demons Real Category to see them all huddled together. I haven’t figured out if there’s a way to organize them in there, because for now it’s sorted by date. I actually wish I could reverse that so you could start off with part one right off the bat instead of having to go looking for it. But ahh well. I’m glad you enjoy the site!

Thank you for your comment and God bless you!

  5. This is one of my new favorite websites and I wish it would have been around about a decade ago or more. Before learning about God and Jesus, my experience with the spiritual realm was based on experiences with ghosts, demons, and once an angel. I have had outer body experiences since a child, as well as prophetic dreams. The supernatural realm has always been a fascination of mine and when I was a kid, one game my friends and I would often play is light as a feather stiff as a board. My great grandmother got me interested in palm reading and tarot cards and my aunt got me into astrology and numerology. I started going to psychics and shamans once I got to college and took an interest in hallucinogens when I was 14, trying them near the end of high school. When I was pregnant with my first son, I used a quija board and I think that was the final straw. A few years ago, I became addicted to drugs (which I got help for and am now living drug free) and came close to death several times. I saw my boyfriend at the time become possessed right before he almost overdosed – it was scary and surreal and it’s hard to just forget about it and move on. During that time, I was going to a psychic that told me about incubus, demons that spiritually rape you while you sleep and told me that I have been being attacked by them since I was a child. I was surprised when she put it this way because I knew I was being attacked some of the times but was unaware why or how often.

    • Hi there Donna,

Wow, thank you for that testimony! It seems that you found the Lord just in time! I wish I did have this site around a couple of decades ago just for the purpose of pointing out what these things really are that are so enticing about the supernatural realm. What an awesome testimony about what you went through! It seems that many describe their journey into demonic practices kind of like drug addiction. Starts out one way and in time, turns into something completely different. It’s a blessing that you’ve been set free of these things.

One question though, it’s apparent that you’ve been saved by the grace of God in Christ Jesus, did you undergo any deliverance of any kind to shake the spiritual baggage that was accumulated through all of those experiences? I do know that sometimes the Lord just takes care of it upon being saved, but there are some things that need to be renounced, such as generational curses (which I blame for things that go on with small children), or things of that nature. Just curious, about what the Lord did for you to steer you out of the spiritual and seemingly physical torment you found yourself in.

Having me talking about it is one thing, but having the perspective of someone who has traversed that path and has been thankfully lifted out of it means much more to someone that might be going through similar problems. If you could e-mail me your story, I’d be happy to even put it up as it’s own post if you’d like.

Anyways thank you for your kind words about the site! I’m always happy when someone is blessed by it!

God bless you richly in Christ Jesus for all of your days!

  6. Website name is very creative, non-cliche and give readers a new insight about Christianity and the supernatural world. One of the most interesting content of this website is the Book of Enoch, I used to study this stuff all the time and the Book of Enoch is something that is often overlooked or not even mentioned in mainstream Christian and Biblical websites. Also, mentioning Nephilim gives this website more juice, as it draws the attention to people interesting in UFOs and their connections to ancient civilizations. This website is again, up to my ally.

    • Hello and thank you for your comment!

I’m glad you like it. This post is one of eleven that I’ve cut so far from the ‘Are Demons Real’ series, and I couldn’t answer the question whether or not they’re real without getting into the history that complements the Genesis 6 account, which is found in the book of Enoch. Can’t get there without going there. lol. It is a pretty contreversial issue, as it challenges many presuppositions that have been adopted in the Christian world.

Thanks again for commenting and God bless you! Keep your eyes peeled for the rest of the series, as I’ve been cutting different sections of it every couple of days.

  7. Hi Brian,
Interesting read, I believe in demon possessions because I’ve seen it myself and know people who have experienced similar things. I think doing sin and being in bad environments can make you more likely to be affected. Also I believe that there is people, like magicians and sorcerers that work with these demons and get them to possess individuals. What do you think about this?

    • Hi there Adam,

Sure, different environments that demons are attracted to will affect anyone. Doesn’t mean possessed, but they don’t need to possess anyone in order to oppress someone. As far as sin goes, absolutely. God didn’t tell us different things not to do to hear himself speak. All the things he says to do and not to do are for very good reasons.

I’ll define what I mean by sin. You’ve got your accidental or spur of the moment kind of sins, that you need to ask to be forgiven for, repent, and move along. But there are all kinds of other sins that you actually need to go out of your way to do. Those, I believe anyways, are what opens doors in the spirit where they can enter in and start the downward spiral. And the more time goes on, the worse it gets, the more doors you wind up opening, so on…

I’ve added the answer concerning witchcraft and the other things you mentioned to the Bible Q&A page! So head on over there to check it out.

So I’m with you on all counts! Keep your eyes peeled because Lord willing, I’ll have a post about this topic up on the site in about a week.

Thank you for your comment and God bless you always!

  8. This is a very interesting and controversial topic.

There are many who don’t believe demons exist and others who say people use them as a excuse to abuse drugs. Well the bible says they are real and we need to protect ourselves with the shield of God.

The reason we have to believe in the bible is that many other things have been prophecied and come true over time.

    • Hi there Michel,

Absolutely! Prophecy is being fulfilled at breakneck speed these days! The problem is, very few recognize it because very few care to learn what those prophecies are. It really seems most of the world today have never read the Bible in a comprehensive way. If they did, and was able to recognize the prophetic times that we’re in, it would more than likely promote some changes in beliefs and lifestyles.

And you’re right, many people don’t believe demons exist, but I’ve known a few people who were once atheistic I guess I could call them. But their entire worldview was shattered by seeing one of these things. It’s the trickle effect.

When an unbeliever sees a demon, it rattles them to the point that they start to think about it… Well, if demons are real, then Satan’s real. If Satan’s real then God must be real!!!! Uh-oh! From there, the decision is Christ, or not Christ. I’d advise that people choose Christ Jesus, as there is no other way to God the Father but by Him.

Thank you for your comment and God bless you!

  9. Thank you, this is a good subject, I see most of the problems sometimes in the christians themselves, the ones who talk about them a lot and the ones who go looking for them, but the worst is for those christians who are babys and still eating baby food like Paul talks about, who do not get fed from the word of God, and they are empty and then they are back and worst then before like the bible talks about, I try never unless I have to discuss demons, and never do we give them credit where its us doing the wrong thing, and again this is very good, I pray many that need to know about will read this, and understand, God bless you and your family, and stop them from going around reburking everybody and there demons, its not a good thing if you don’t know when or who, and its not a lot of fun, cause I rather go around blessing people, again I love your writings

    • Hi Joyce,
Not sure what you mean about stop them from rebuking everybody and their demons. Not sure what you’re referring to. I don’t do online spiritual rebukes like others may do, I do it offline. lol. Typing it does nothing in my opinion. But time and space means nothing to God. If you are rebuking something that is effecting you in some way, and you’re not doing something that you’re not suppose to to invite it, then God will honor your words being used in his behalf, or in other words using his name. The name of Jesus, Name above all names! The rebuke will take root, even from one thousand miles away. There’s no distance with God. So why type it? I just don’t see the point in it.
Thanks for your kind words and comments Joyce! I’m glad that you’re enjoying the site!!
May God bless you and yours always in Jesus mighty name!

  10. Hello, thank you for your post which was very informative and well researched, especially on this topic. I am also a believer and I believe that demons exist and that they can still possess people. It’s sad that sometimes the modern world doesn’t recognize that some strange states of illness result more from spiritual need than medical need, don’t you think? Anyway, I enjoyed your post and may God continue to bless you!

    • Hi there,

I agree with you. The world tries like crazy to solve a spiritual issue with carnal means. And it is a shame. But hey, the world is an evil place, and I guess we shouldn’t expect to see it get any better spiritually. In fact, I suspect that it is going to get much worse in the days and years ahead. God makes it perfectly clear what happens when there’s no knowledge of God in the land in the book of Hosea.

Thank you for your comment & I’m glad you enjoyed the site!

      God bless you!

  11. Another good one, God bless you my brother, I just have a little comment, I did have that feeling in your page that I felt something bad in it, and I know now who, and quickly after he said to me something evil, maybe it was just for me but I knew what to do, and then I blocked him him from my page, but I like everything you write, and I know it comes from the Holy Spirit, God bless you and your family

    • Hi Joyce,
Among the Christian scene is a powerful spirit of religion. To me, when you get a group of believers together, that’s the one that will divide and conquer. And I don’t mean a religious attitude, I mean a spirit of religion. A demonic spirit.
You’ll find them in any social outlet you wind up getting involved with. The first tell tale sign is that if you disagree on them concerning scripture that has nothing to do with the basics (salvation, divinity of Christ, Creation, etc.), they will condemn you to hell and tell you so. lol. Divide and conquer. Jesus said:
      Matthew 12:25
And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:
I could go on and on about it, and have had to deal with several. But my advice for dealing with them on line would be, to be as Christlike as possible, pray between comments, and don’t let it mess with you. 🙂
I’m happy that you are enjoying this site! God bless you and yours & may the Lord give you favor in all that you do, in Christ Jesus name!
