Depart from Evil – Daily Devotion of Proverbs chapter sixteen, Verse 6
6 By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the Lord men depart from evil.
Daily Inspiration from These Verses – Depart from Evil
Something that I would strongly suggest, would be a deep study into the Word of God, on the subject of mercy and truth. They are intertwined throughout the Bible 21 times, mostly through the Old Testament, particularly evident in Psalms.
We’ve spoken several times about iniquities in devotionals past, and how they are a sort of spiritual infection that secrets sinful behavior. Here in verse 6, is the method by which we may be rid of these pesky things, that stain our lives and hearts.
Do you want to be purged from iniquities? Well, it’s done through mercy and truth. But who’s mercy and truth is required?
We can spend ample time being merciful, and still harbor iniquities. Also, we can be as truthful as is possible, and the iniquities will still be hanging around. It’s not by our ability to be merciful, any more than it is our acts of being honest or truthful.
It is by the mercy shed upon us by the Lord himself, and by the truth of his Word. Paul tells us, that it is by the washing of the water of the Word that sanctifies and cleanses the church. Also, Jesus says that by his word we are made clean (see scriptures below).
It is through his mercy, because he is so merciful, and by his truth, as his truth endures from generation to generation. Jesus is the Way, Truth, and the Life. Everything about the Lord Jesus, is a testimony of the mercy of the Father toward us, that he would send his only begotten Son to die in our stead, taking on the sins of the world upon himself, so that we wouldn’t have to pay for them.
There is no greater mercy, nor any other name by which men may be saved, should they choose not to pay for their own sins, and take the free gift that the mercy of the Lord has provided. The power infused into the Word of God, will change a man or woman is many different ways, but not the least of which, is to purge iniquities from the heart, which makes more room for real change toward becoming all the more like Jesus.
Which leads us to the rest of the verse, and the title of this devotional. All of the above will fulfill the remainder of verse six, and the fear of the Lord becomes far more powerful in your life. As your iniquities are purged, and their wicked influence is becoming eroded from your heart, you are in fact departing from evil.
All because of the mercy of the Father, and the truth of his Word.

Set an inspiration in our hearts Lord, to search out your Word, and should we be harboring any iniquities, lead us to the words that you’ve preserved, to cause the particular iniquity to be disbanded from our lives forever. Please shed your mercy upon us, your servants, and remove all things that you did not place upon us, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ we pray.
Have you ever noticed how natural it feels, to run along side evil, rather than to depart from evil?
