Proverbs 2: King James Bible
Discretion Preserves – Daily Devotion of Proverbs chapter two, Verses 10-19
10 When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul; 11 Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee: 12 To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things;
13 Who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness; 14 Who rejoice to do evil, and delight in the frowardness of the wicked; 15 Whose ways are crooked, and they froward in their paths:
16 To deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger which flattereth with her words; 17 Which forsaketh the guide of her youth, and forgetteth the covenant of her God.
18 For her house inclineth unto death, and her paths unto the dead. 19 None that go unto her return again, neither take they hold of the paths of life.
Daily Inspiration from These Verses
In the previous devotional, we spoke to the fact that the Father has made our own personal paths to walk on, as we do our utmost to stay within the bounds of his will. Don’t jump the curbs, so to speak.
Well here in this group of verses, we find what staying on his path, using discretion (being a result of wisdom and understanding entering the heart and becoming pleasant to the soul), causes for us to avoid.
He is speaking of deliverance from all of the wickedness (and wicked ones) above. He’s covering many different topics that we will stay clear from using Biblical discretion which are:
- the way of evil men
- from the man speaking froward (difficult to deal with; contrary) things
- the strange woman
- her house reaching down to death
- her paths to the dead
Staying on the right path doesn’t promise a trouble free life. However, much of the unnecessary issues can be stifled by remaining on the path that the Lord made just for you.
These verses are given so that we have an indicator about where we’re walking. If we find ourselves mixed up with the types of problems that the company above bring to the table, we’d do well to insure that we’re truly on the road that the Lord has plowed before us.
Not wandering about on a dark and twisted road. The verses above make it clear that those are roads best left to those who’d rather reject the Lord. We don’t want to be caught on them. The Lord would rather us stay in a place where he can keep us from all of those extra, asked for, troubles.

2 Peter 2: King James Bible
2 And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. 3 And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.
Prayer – Discretion Preserves
Keep us on the path that leads to you, and away from the evil ways of this world. Keep us free from wrinkle or spot, as we traverse in our walk with you, working out our salvation with fear and trembling. Bring us to a place where we will judge rightly, and abstain from all that is wicked in your eyes. We pray this in the mighty name of the Lord Jesus.
Through their spiritual condition, some folks spread their problems around like it’s a communicable disease. Have you ever mixed yourself up with someone who does evil continually, finds themselves in a world of problems, and tries to drag anyone around them into the fray? Or have you witnessed how discretion preserves us from such things?
