Daily Inspiration from Proverbs 18 P. 249 – Ear of the Wise

Proverbs 18: King James Bible

Ear of the Wise – Daily Devotion of Proverbs chapter eighteen, Verse 15

15 The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.

Daily Inspiration from These Verses – Ear of the Wise

The ear seeks it, but the heart gets it. Here is a short diagram of the path knowledge takes, from the moment it is heard, till it finds a resting place in the heart.

From there, it takes wisdom and understanding in order to implement said knowledge into our lives. This verse is a fairly deep one, and is certainly thought provoking.

Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God, right? This is true for sound doctrine and true wisdom, but is that the end all?

No way. We are influenced by several different attacks on our senses, not the least of which is what we hear. As we’ve discussed in the past, Jesus said that we’ll get what we believe in (not verbatim) in one way or the other.

That is something that can be both a blessing and a curse, depending what it is that you’re believing for. Faith comes by hearing, but faith in what is between what you’re listening to, and you. But if it’s from hearing by the Word of God, then it’s between you and the Lord.

I don’t think that people who are wise, are so by accident. If it isn’t directly distributed by the Lord (which happens), then it takes someone to make the decision to search out wisdom. Or perhaps the Father intervenes, and causes for someone to get to a place where they might hear wisdom, in hope that it will make it to the heart.

But the heart is not under the Father’s control. He can give anyone all the chances in the world, to hear wisdom, but if the heart of the person won’t receive it, then that’s that. That’s why in the scripture above, it says a prudent heart gets wisdom.

One that will recognize the good things to hold on to, and what to reject as foolishness. This isn’t a default reaction, but is built up as a flexing muscle, by way of reading the Word of God, and taking it seriously.

The Lord will give wisdom liberally, to any who comes to him for it. But the thing is, will we receive what he sends us, or pass it off as nothing, because it doesn’t fit into what we think is right by worldly standards?

Something to think about.

With so much noise that is trying to get into our ear-gate, we need the direction and discernment of the Lord to aid us in separating the wheat from the chaff. The verse above says that the ear of the wise seeks knowledge, it doesn’t say that knowledge is all it hears.

So bear in mind, there is an abundant amount of garbage that will enter into all of our senses, if we allow it to come in. And if something does get through, is your heart right concerning the Word of the Lord to be able to discern it?

Prayer

Father,

Thank you for your lessons, and for all that you have detailed for each of us to hold on to. Lead us all Father, through every facet of our lives, to use our ears to search out knowledge, and give prudence to our hearts, in order to get that knowledge. Give us a supernatural type of understanding, and may your Word always be on the ready inside of us, to stand against and resist anything that gets through that is not of you. This we pray in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Amen

Question

Would you consider yourself to have an ear of the wise?

  1. Thanks Brian…yes indeed, we must have our hearts tender to the leading of the Lord in our lives. Too many people have a hardened heart, which is why the Word of God just falls be the way side for them; it has no effect on them at all. So much information out there i.e. food shows, sports shows, tv and movies that blaspheme the Lord etc etc it is easy for people to get caught up in what feeds their carnality. The only time that they think about our Lord is to visciously blaspheme Him. Not surprisingly, every false religion is given a lot of good coverage on tv these days, but true Christianity is vilified/attacked. And it will only get worse. Stay strong brother.

    • Amen George,
I couldn’t agree with you more. We have stumbled into the days, where men call good evil, and evil good. And trade truth over for a lie, so their ears are tickled. We are in those days, and the best part is, the Lord will one day soon come, and put an end to all of this nonsense. What a terrible and final day that will be for all of those who placed their trust in the world.
      God bless you George!
      In Christ,
      Brian
