Fountain of Life – Daily Devotion of Proverbs chapter fourteen, Verses 26-27
26 In the fear of the Lord is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge. 27 The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.
Daily Inspiration from These Verses – Fountain of Life
Before we dive into the fountain of life, there is something that I think is worth bringing up. To understand something that may go unnoticed, we need to understand that words matter. There are a host of verses in the Bible, that speak about the fear of the Lord.
Here’s some fun facts. There are exactly 30 verses that contain the exact phrase “fear of the Lord,” throughout the entire Bible. You can find 29 of them in the Old Testament, 1 is found in the New.
27 of those verses, contain the word “the” in front of the phrase “fear of the Lord.” In most of these, you’ll find that it refers to someone who is walking in the fear of the Lord. The rest of the verses, describe what the fear of the Lord is, and does.
Out of those 27 verses, 5 include the word “in.” Some of those 5, speak about someone being in, or walking inside, the fear f the Lord. Bu there are a couple that speak about what we can find inside the fear of the Lord. That’s where I’m trying to get to in saying all of that.
In the two verses above, we get both examples of what I’m trying to convey. In the first verse (verse 26), we are given an ingredient of what is “in” or “inside,” the fear of the Lord. And that ingredient is “confidence.” The following verse speaks about what the fear of the Lord is and does.
If you are confident of your salvation in and through Christ Jesus, and you know that you have a place of refuge with him, then you are in the fear of the Lord. Conversely, if you’re not, and feel as if you need to work your way to Heaven, then that isn’t fear of the Lord. That’s dread of judgement.
And that brings us back to the fountain of life. What’s he mean by telling us that the fear of the Lord is a fountain of life? First of all, Jesus came, that we may have life, and life more abundantly.
This is the Old Testament, I know. But when you’re talking about the fountain of life, it doesn’t hurt to remember that Jesus is life. He is the way, the truth, and the life. While we’re on it, didn’t Jesus also speak about rivers of living water flowing from the bellies of those who believe in him? I do believe that he did.
If we take a mental picture of a fountain that is gushing water, and apply it to what we’re talking about concerning “the fear of the Lord is a fountain of life,” it is an excellent example for us to go by. God Almighty is life, and “in” the fear of him (deep and profound reference), we can take part and be happy and content, confident in his love for us, his children.

Thank you so much for your wisdom and understanding, and your willingness to share it with us your children. Thank you also, for your great and wonderful promises. Help us to understand more about the ingredients of what it is to be in the fear of you, not just to fear you, but to rest inside of it. You are our rock, our fortress, and our shield.
