Proverbs 1: King James Bible
Hearken unto God – Daily Devotion of Proverbs chapter one, Verses 31-33
To those who reject God’s Wisdom and reproof (see Proverbs 1:24-30 for context)
31 Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.
32 For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.
33 But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.
Daily Inspiration from These Verses
Have you ever eaten the fruit of your own way? If you have, these verses may hit home with you. When you’ve turned and done what is wrong, then suffered for it, it’s usually because of the fears of that wrongdoing coming into fruition.
The Lord Jesus gives us a taste of what “our own devices” look like. Here is the Lord’s definition:
Mark 7: King James Bible
21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, 22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: 23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.
With every sin comes fear of some sort of repercussion…
- getting caught
- being exposed
- tarnishing a good name
- losing a loved one
- losing a family
- losing a home
- losing friends
- losing money
- losing peace
- losing life
All of the above can and do happen to just about anyone due to circumstances that have nothing to do with ignoring the Word of the Lord. Rain falls on the just and unjust alike. The difference is, these things “could” happen to anyone, but is promised by God Almighty to happen (or shall happen) to those who go out of their way to ignore him.
For those who are heading down these roads that lead to destruction, the Lord gives warning. The simple and foolish will tuck warnings away, thinking “that won’t happen to me!” And continue on till they cross a line, and are forced to deal with the repercussions of their actions.
In these three verses, the Lord uses the word “shall” five times. No room to debate or deaden the intent here. The word “shall” used by the Father becomes a sure thing. No Questions asked. That said, there are three instances that we must stay clear from, and two instances that we need to embrace as we walk out our faith.
Those two precious “shall’s” are reserved for those of us who hearken unto the Lord. When we do as he says and take heed to his warnings and foresight, we shall dwell in safely, and shall free from the fear of evil. What an excellent promise of the Lord God Almighty!!

Hearken unto God – Our Prayer
Open our ear so that we may be more able to hearken unto you, and not be found following our own devices. Please lead us in every way Lord, and keep us free from the fear of evil, and cause for us to dwell safely as you’ve promised in these verses, in the name of the Lord Jesus, your only begotten Son I pray.
Have you ever had the occasion to eat the fruit of your own way; having hearkened unto your flesh as opposed to deciding to hearken unto God?
