Daily Inspiration from These Verses – Heart Sick
We all have suffered at one time or another, with bouts of heart sickness. But before we dive into this verse, let’s take a look at the definition of deferred.
1. postponed or delayed.
2. suspended or withheld for or until a certain time or event: a deferred payment; deferred taxes.
This isn’t talking about hopes that are cancelled or crushed. But rather, hopes that are postponed or delayed. Hopes that have been suspended or withheld for a certain amount of time. So… How is it, that hope deferred wind up making us heart sick, or heartbroken?
As a Christian speaking to Christians, I have a perfect example of a hope deferred, that we can all relate to. And the hope that I’d like to put on display, would be the hope of glory.
The blessed hope, of one day standing before our Heavenly Father, and hearing him say,”Well done, my good and faithful servant.” Or maybe even getting there and taking in Heaven itself, meeting the Lord Jesus face to face, and witnessing all that the Lord has promised and reserved for us.
That’s our hope, and indeed it is deferred. Well, it seems that way at least. Most of us, when times are good and all is well, are content in looking forward to being in the presence of the Lord at the end of the race.
But for some people, and I wouldn’t exclude myself in this, when things are bad, and everything seems to be going sideways, the outlook is a bit different. Instead of looking forward to it, we may find ourselves feeling that longing and heartbreak, pleading with the Lord to call the race early on account of bad weather, and get to go home sooner rather than later. “Stick a fork in me Lord, I’m done!”
In those dark moments, we can relate to the point this piece of scripture gives. The heartache and scripture calls it, having the heart made sick, is every bit as debilitating as a broken bone or a physical wound. Ever been there? I have.
What must be remembered, even in our darkest days, is the second half of this scripture. That when that blessed desire comes, and come it will, oh what a tree of life it will be! And concerning the example I’ve been talking about, it will quite literally be a tree of life!
Also, it should serve us well, to remember that a hope deferred is also a hope that is still certain, just not when we want it, or when we expect it. Our hope, our Blessed Hope, is sealed by the Holy Spirit as a promise. No matter our circumstances, this should always be cause for excitement!
