Daily Inspiration from Proverbs 15 P.197 – Hedge of Thorns

Proverbs 15: King James Bible

Hedge of Thorns – Daily Devotion of Proverbs chapter fifteen, Verse 19

19 The way of the slothful man is as an hedge of thorns: but the way of the righteous is made plain.

Daily Inspiration from These Verses – Hedge of Thorns

I can think of multiple meaning behind the first half of this verse, and none of them bode well for the sluggard. Can you create a clear picture in your mind, of what a hedge of thorns would look like? Thorn bushes aren’t the most sightly things, and tend to sprawl out all over the place.

There are some bushes with thorns that, when well kept, aren’t aesthetically displeasing; a rose bush for example. But think about it for a second… This would be a hedge that belongs to a sluggard. How well kept would it possibly be?

My guess is, not at all. Not only is it an eyesore, but is dangerous to be around. The worse that hedge gets, the more difficult it becomes to make any way passing by it clear.

The slothful man is his own worst enemy. He waits till something becomes a problem outside of his control, when he could have easily done a little work to avoid the problem in the first place. In time, everything begins to take that route, and is clear by the way they live, the condition of their surroundings, etc…

The thorns represent the self inflicted obstacles that plague the slothful person. And the longer the obstacles are left to grow and spread, the sharper those thorns get. It is extremely difficult to break from being a slothful type of person.

It takes slothful people to get up and do things when they don’t feel lie it, or ignore their body, if they’ve convinced themselves that they no longer can. Sometimes doing simple things seem too large in the eyes of people suffering from this, and is well worth taking to the Lord.

As I’ve said in other posts, the scriptures of the Lord are for us to use for ourselves, or to help others. It isn’t so we can pick people out and throw down judgement upon them. So this is a heads up by the Father, to those of us who may fall under the slotherly category. Also, a warning for us to stay alert in order to avoid being slotherly in how we do things physically as well as spiritually.

The second half of this verse, is the Father giving us the incentive to do the things we need to do, and to take care of what needs to get done. That would be our way made plain.

No self inflicted train-wrecks, no bellyache educing phone calls, no hiding from neighbors because of what they must be saying about the condition of your property or belongings… These are just a few examples in a physical sense.

All of these are avoidable in one way or the other, and take doing to get there. For your information, it takes some doing to to avoid issues spiritually as well! This is a piece of information that too many people tend to ignore.

Keep the hedge of thorns out of your walk with the Lord, because he is not the one who placed them on the way, we do.

Romans 12: King James Bible

10 Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honor preferring one another; 11 Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord; 12 Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer; 13 Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality.

Hebrews 6: King James Bible

8 But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned.

Hebrews 6: King James Bible

11 And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end: 12 That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

Thank you for this short verse that tells us so much about your will concerning how we should live. Should any of us be slothful in spirit or physically, heal our bodies, minds, and hearts, to do all that is required that is possible for us to do, and fill in with your power, to tackle all of the things that we can’t. And if any of us should be a sluggard in spirit, break us free from that bondage, so that we can walk with sure steps, and our way kept plain, just the way you designed it. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ we pray.

Have you allowed a hedge of thorns to grow in your way?

  1. Thanks Brian…it is easy for someone to fall into the category of the sluggard. Putting off, each day, waht must get done, until it all piles up. But if we all did a little each day, we wouldn’t have any thorns in our property (lives). It is easiest to get into a daily habit, then to put things off “until later”…funny how “later” never comes. Ok, Brian, thanks and stay strong Brother.

    • Hi there George,
Thank you for your comment! You’re right, later is never now, so it never really comes. However, too late always seems to come when you tend to put things off. lol.
The Word tells us to redeem the time, because the days are evil. Part of that evil is every kind of distraction, that will work toward affecting us in a negative way at some point. Procrastination is a piece of that I believe.
Thanks again Brother, and may the Lord bless you mightily in Jesus precious name.
      In Christ,
