Proverbs 4: King James Bible
Daily Devotion of Proverbs chapter four, Verses 1-4
1 Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding. 2 For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law.
3 For I was my father’s son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother. 4 He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live.
Daily Inspiration from These Verses
Right off the bat in this chapter, we are again likened to children being instructed by a father. And straight away we are given direct orders, not recommendations. They are to:
- Hear the instruction
- attend to know understanding
- forsake not his law
Then King Solomon gives us a little insight into commandments that he received from King David, which are similar to what he’s telling us in the first couple of verses. The end result is life, and life more abundant. “Keep my commandments and live” is an order with an immediate result following.
If the scripture says to keep his commandments and live, the flip side to that is what? You guessed it. Forsake his commandments and die.
“Hear ye” is a strange command to people who are reading his words, don’t you think? Well, it is important to hear the Word of God, just as it is important to read it, speak it, and live by it. Why?
Because the Word of God is to the brain, what draino is to a clogged sink. We are bombarded every minute of every day by all kinds of things from the world. If we have neglected to hear or somehow listen to the Word of God, what is it that we allow ourselves to be filled with through the ear?
Sometimes we’re to speak the Word of God, only for the sole purpose of our own ears to hear what our own mouth is saying!
“Attend to know understanding” is just like saying deal with knowing understanding. Deal with it. If you don’t know what the Lord is talking about in any given verse, deal with it until you do.
Don’t skim past anything, especially things that are difficult to understand. God is there to help us should we ask him to through his Holy Ghost.
Once you hear it, and get to the point where you know it & understand it, don’t forsake it. Don’t pass it off, particularly if what it is you’ve come to understand winds up being an inconvenient truth.
Sometimes when we reach an understanding into something that the Lord has to help us out with, it is something that might just threaten to remove us out of our comfort zone. If that winds up being the case, it is more than likely that the Father has something prepared for you outside of that self established zone.

John 14: King James Bible
21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
John 15: King James Bible
10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.
Help us each day to hear your instruction, to attend to know understanding, and to forsake not your commandments. Help us to realize loving you with all our hearts, minds and souls, and to love our neighbors as ourselves. Furthermore, help us to love the brethren as you love us, and cause for us to grow ever closer to being more like Jesus. And in that name of the Lord Jesus we pray.
