21 He that delicately bringeth up his servant from a child shall have him become his son at the length.

Daily Inspiration from This Verse – Like a Child

This verse might seem to be antiquated on its surface. I mean, how many people that aren’t already related bring up an employee from a child, and become attached as a parent would be in time?

Child labor laws make this to be a verse that is better served in countries that employ small children. But then again, knowing how the majority of those kids are treated, I think the powers that be in those areas might need to concentrate on different verses than this one.

Since this isn’t something on the surface or in a more physical way we can all relate to, let’s think about it spiritually. Spiritually speaking, how can we relate to this verse?

Let’s put that on the shelf for a second. We’ll get back to that in a moment, but first let’s talk about apprenticeship.

Wikipedia tells us that apprenticeship is a system of training a new generation of practitioners of a trade or profession with real time training as well as accompanying study. An apprentice starts with little to no experience of the trade, and works closely with a professional of that given trade.

This continues on to various extents, until that person can stand on his own two feet on the job, and eventually becomes that expert. Depending on the trade, the expert/apprentice relationship varies.

Now, back to the verse above. Because that servant is like a child to the person who delicately brought him up, it is likely that the servant will one day gain an inheritance as a son of daughter would.

We can see this happening in certain circumstances, where a business owner becomes attached to an employee, perhaps over time has become like a child to the owner. That, mixed with the abilities necessary to stand on their own feet, could cause that owner to give the employee the opportunity to buy the owner out, or even hand over the business when retirement comes calling.

In a sense, that is similar to an inheritance. If that business owner had a son or daughter, it’s likely that they would have inherited the business. They may do the same to the next best thing, which would be a faithful employee when there are no children involved with the business.

Let’s head back to looking at all of this through a spiritual lens.

If we look at the verse above, any one of us who have called upon the name of the Lord for Salvation can relate to it. We are both servants and sons and daughters of the Most High God.

We’re all God’s creation, but we’re not all God’s children. Only those of us who have Christ Jesus are deemed to be the sons and daughters of the Lord.

We are given a newborn spirit, which is directly from the Lord. From there, despite the age of our flesh, we begin a new walk with him.

A walk that is like a child walking with his Father. Like a child learning from his Father. Like a child that seeks to gain approval from his Father.

And as we learn and grow in him, putting to practice all that we learn from him as the apprentice would the expert, we step closer and closer to our inheritance day by day.

The Lord delicately brings us up from that newborn spirit, helping us to grow and eventually reach a spiritual maturity. We’re never quite done though, are we?

He is always teaching us things that we’ve missed or reminding us of things that we’ve forgotten. There is always something new he has to share with us on an individual basis. His Word is never exhausted.

We must come to him like a child, and grow in him as HIS child. Personally, I’ve never met anyone who has walked by faith in the Lord and regretted it.

Matthew 18:

3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. 4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5 And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.

Mark 10:

15 Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.

Galatians 4:

4 Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all; 2 But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father.

3 Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world: 4 But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, 5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

Prayer

Father,

Thank you for your Word, and for the salvation that you’ve offered to us, a people who doesn’t deserve such a sacrifice to have been made on our behalf. We thank you and are constantly in awe of your graces. Help us to be your children in word and deed Father. Please involve yourself delicately and intricately in our lives, that will yield good and tangible results in our righteousness with you. If it pleases you, teach us how to build up our inheritance to come, and help us to put a smile on your face as a parent would a child who seeks to please his father. In the name of Jesus we pray.

Amen
