Daily Inspiration from These Verses – Prayer of the Upright
I understand being upright, in the same light that one may become righteous. They are almost synonymous, but do differ a bit. Either way, both is only made possible, by way of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Being righteous, is akin to a lens that the Lord can see us through, by way of Christ’s crucifixion, and Christ in us, the Hope of glory. We’ve been made the righteousness of God “in” Christ.
Being upright, is how we conduct our personal and public lives, as servants of the Lord, and as citizens of Heaven. The chance of being upright only begins, upon salvation.
Without Christ, our righteousness is as filthy rags in the eyes of the Lord. In similar fashion, there are no upright people outside of Christ Jesus by the Lord’s standard.
Now the world has it’s own take on righteousness and being upright. And they share a few similar traits, but in all, the world’s standard will serve man, beast, earth; anything but the Lord. That which is from the Lord will serve the Lord.
Notice the stark difference in verse 8 above, that while the wicked is attempting to get works based attention of the Lord, a simple prayer from the upright brings delight to the Father. This should be viewed as a stern rebuke, or admonishment, to those who are doing all they can to earn their ticket into Heaven.
There is one way,and only one way to the Father, and that will never come by way of our works or sacrifices. The only sacrifice that is acceptable in the eyes of the Lord, is that which he performed himself, by sending his Son to the cross in our stead.
Now, there are many things that we can do to please the Lord, sacrifice time to study his Word and get to know him better. Sacrifice of praise we can read about in the Word, so on… But without first having Christ Jesus as a personal Lord and Savior, it’s all worthless.
That’s like telling the Father, that his sacrifice isn’t good enough, or your way is better than the Lord’s way. The Father couldn’t find a stronger word to use about the sacrifices of the wicked, which is an abomination.
Why not be upright in the eyes of the Father? Isn’t his way so much easier? He prefers obedience over sacrifice, and if you’re being obedient to him, then you are being upright, and he’ll take delight even in your prayers to him.
The Lord wants to hear from us, his children. I still get a sense of awe, just to think that the Creator of all the Universe and everything within it and outside of it, wants to listen to what we’ve got to say! In my opinion, that’s a great look into the heart and the love of the Father.

Thank you for opening our eyes to your ways and your mercy. Thank you for your Word and the help you’ve given to us, so that we may see your handiwork clearly as we traverse through it. Should you look upon any of us Lord, and find us wanting, and not walking upright in your eyes, please correct us Lord, so that it becomes a delight for you to hear from us. Please bring to salvation all who you foresee will come, and cleanse the Body of Christ from all that the world has done to it. Help all of us to follow after righteousness. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ we pray.
When you pray, is the Father listening to the prayer of the upright?
