Daily Inspiration from This Verse – Remove the Scorner
I will openly admit, I’ve often had a hard time dealing with this verse. Not really the verse itself, but simply doing what it says to do.
So many times in the past, I thought it better to continuously attempt to convert a scorner, or teach him better than what he was spouting off about. In reality, all I was accomplishing was to feed the flames of contention and strife, accomplishing nothing more than argument practice.
As many of us may know, it is an exercise of futility trying to convert a scorner. I believe that only by the Father’s intervention through softening the heart and disarming the scorner, can someone be reached. It took me awhile, but I learned that through a good deal of verbal battles (verbal and type).
If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem as it relates to dealing with a scorner. Contention, strife, and reproach takes more than the scorner to continue on. It takes others to respond in a manner that is opposite the instructions given to us above in verse 10.
There’s a difference between a scorner and someone who just isn’t saved yet. There are people out there that may never receive the Father in Christ, but are not scorners. Those who do their utmost to tear down what you believe, create doubt where there should be faith, or to cause discord among the brethren, are the types of people that are being referred to here.
A scorner isn’t someone who just disagrees with you. They are people who hold you in contempt or disdain due to how you believe. They are the first to mock, ridicule, or deride us because of our faith in Christ Jesus, and our hold on the Gospel.
They have no ears to hear, nor eyes to see. As the scriptures will explain to us, they are spiritually dead, but also despise the Lord or even the possibility of his existence. Kind of conflicting when you think about it. Hating and reviling someone that you don’t believe exists, meaning that you hate, well, nothing.
But we have the Spirit of the Living God, opening our eyes and helping us move through spiritual matters. Through him, we can determine whether or not we are kicking against the pricks with particular people, being able to conclude whether or not they are scorners.
But should we find ourselves dealing with a scorner, the instructions above are clear. Remove him from the situation, whatever that situation may be. This is much more difficult that it sounds, but it is the way the Lord has instructed.
We all want to be peaceful, live peaceably, do things of the Lord with a glad heart and a cheerful spirit. That isn’t going to happen when the scorner is around. We’re instructed not to cast our pearls before swine… In my view, that’s a way of saying not to entertain the appetites of a scorner.

19 Again, think ye that we excuse ourselves unto you? we speak before God in Christ: but we do all things, dearly beloved, for your edifying. 20 For I fear, lest, when I come, I shall not find you such as I would, and that I shall be found unto you such as ye would not: lest there be debates, envyings, wraths, strifes, backbitings, whisperings, swellings, tumults: 21 And lest, when I come again, my God will humble me among you, and that I shall bewail many which have sinned already, and have not repented of the uncleanness and fornication and lasciviousness which they have committed.

17 But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; 18 How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts. 19 These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit.

9 But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain
Thank you for this wonderful verse, as well with all of the others we can find in your Word. Help us to be wise when coming across a scorner, in whatever the situation may be. Guide our words and actions Lord, to be true to your Word, and all that you’ve instructed us to do. Help us to never deal harshly with anyone, but grant us the resolve to remove the scorner, to cease strifes, contentions, and reproach, from among us all. In the4 name of the Lord Jesus Christ we pray.
Have you ever tried to convert a scorner rather than remove the scorner?
