Proverbs 15: King James Bible
Reproof of Life – Daily Devotion of Proverbs chapter fifteen, Verses 30-31
30 The light of the eyes rejoiceth the heart: and a good report maketh the bones fat. 31 The ear that heareth the reproof of life abideth among the wise.
Daily Inspiration from These Verses – Reproof of Life
Just look at all of the different parts being spoken about in the two verses above. We’ve got the eyes, the heart, bones, and ears! Needless to say, there’s a lot of ground to be covered with these few pieces of scripture.
But there’s a particular phrase that jumps out at me, and that would be “the reproof of life.” There are three places in the entire Bible, where we find reproof and life complementing each other. There is the verse above, Proverbs 6:23, and Proverbs 10:17.
In these circumstances, reproof is akin to instruction or correction. There are a host of different degrees of severity or actions taken by the Father in order to reprove someone. The point of it all, is that we’re saved by the Lord from ourselves.
Reproof is to help us throughout life, not punishment from an angry God. That’s why we can find through scripture, that he who hates reproof of the Lord loves death, and he who loves the reproof of the Lord finds life.
The Father doesn’t nit pick at us, we’re just wrong that much. We live in a world that has all but rejected the Father, his ways, and the sound instruction he’s given, so that we may live with as little self inflicted trouble as possible.
In many ways, we’re our own worst enemy, which is why the Lord needs to intercede in the lives of those whom he loves. His reproof gives life. It doesn’t take away from those who are wise enough to recognize his reproof.
I know without even a struggle, I’ve ignored the Father’s reproof for a long, long time. Not because I was trying to be rebellious, but because I wasn’t wise enough to recognize the Lord reproving me or my actions.
Which (by the way), is another great reason why we should dive in and get a firm grip and handle on the Word of God. The reason is, to happen upon scripture that opens our eyes to something the Lord’s been trying over and over again, to reprove us of.
We might happen upon some scripture by way of the Holy Ghost, that causes the scales to fall from our eyes, and turn the lights on, and cause for you to make alterations that will either recall or stave off the Lord’s reproof. I’d consider that the easy way.
The hard way, is for the Father to have to constantly crank up the consequences, or the heaviness of the reproof. He is longsuffering and patient, and will do what it takes to help those who he loves. Even if it feels at the time like punishment, it’s not. Reproof rarely feels good to us, but resets our course, to pluck us up from where we’ve wound up, and placed firmly back to where we belong.
Praise God for his patience and mercy, that he takes his time to reprove and teach us the ways of life.

John 16: King James Bible
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 Of sin, because they believe not on me; 10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; 11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
2 Timothy 3: King James Bible
16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
2 Timothy 4: King James Bible
2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine.
Thank you for your Word and for your wisdom. Grant us that wisdom Lord, so that we should be able to recognize your reproof, and also recognize the point behind it. Lead us by the hand if necessary, to bring us to the point that the reproof isn’t necessary any longer, but that we’ve learned the lesson you had in mind, and repent. Thank you also for your attention, your mercy, and your longsuffering. We praise you Father. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ we pray.
