Rule Over Your Own Spirit – Daily Devotion of Proverbs chapter twenty five, Verse 28
28 He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.
Daily Inspiration from This Verse – Rule Over Your Own Spirit
Do you have rule over your own spirit? Kind of a strange thing to think about at first, especially in the world of Christianity. The Lord God Almighty should be ruling within us, right?
Yes he is. But as he rules, he has seen fit to give us a thing called free will. To have rule over your own spirit doesn’t mean that you have rule over the Holy Spirit. The difference between the two is colossal, as the Holy Ghost (or Spirit) is the Spirit of the Lord himself, and our spirit is a piece of ourselves.
Without Christ we are spiritually dead, unable to rightly discern the things of the spirit. Without the intervention of the Holy Ghost, and having our spirits born anew (or born again), the flesh is actively ruling over the dormant or dead spirit.
This is why deception comes so easily to those who haven’t been born again, and for those who have chosen to get saved, yet haven’t chosen to stick with the things of the Lord. But why does this happen? The Lord explains this to us in the example given above.
A city that is broken down and without walls is the example that the Lord is giving us, relating to having no rule over your own spirit. There are several things that this can tell us about how things are at play spiritually.
- When a city has no walls, it is easily conquered
- A city that is broken has already been sacked
- Being broken and without walls, it is more likely to suffer all kinds of hardships
- Having no walls means anyone or anything can pass in or out without any resistance
- A broken city with no walls can be easily taken under the control of a stronger neighbor
Take all of that, and apply it to having no rule over your own spirit. Think of all the different things that await someone who leaves their walls broken down and their figurative city in ruin.
When you rule over your own spirit you have the choice to achieve spiritual strength through the Word of God prayerfully and by the lead of the Holy Ghost, or not. The Lord has placed it in our own hands.
When you choose not to, you are more susceptible to deception, and a whole boatload of falsehoods about the Lord himself, creation, and generally how things work. You wind up as the Apostle Paul put it: tossed to and fro by winds of doctrine.
False doctrine can lead to your spirit to be similar to a city that has been under the influence of a foreign government. Spiritually speaking, a Christian who has been genuinely born anew can make decisions that will land him under the banner of his own enemy.
Of course unwittingly, but that doesn’t change the fact, and the calling upon that person’s life can be snuffed out without the Lord’s intervention under severe circumstances. We believers in Christ need to understand the target that is upon us regardless of the fact that we’ve got Christ in us.
Yes, no weapon formed against us will prosper and that is the heritage of the servants of the Lord. But who needs weapons when there’s no resistance. Resist the devil, and he will flee. When you have rule over your own spirit, you have the wherewithal to do just that.
SOMEBODY will have rule over your own spirit. If it’s not you, it’ll be someone or rather, something else. As stated above, the Lord has given us this responsibility. Is our flesh ruling over our spirits? Are outside influences taking charge over the things that we say and do?
Even when turning all things over to the Father, this is a decision that you make as having rule over your own spirit. He’s never forced this upon us. Take care what you do with it, and allow your spirit to grow ever stronger in the Lord God Almighty, and in the power of his might.

Matthew 12: King James Bible
43 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. 44 Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished.
45 Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.
John 16: King James Bible
13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
Ephesians 4: King James Bible
11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ: 14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: 16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
Thank you for the insight and power you’ve incorporated in the verse above. Help us to always remember that you have given us control over our own spirits, and need to be responsible with what you’ve given. Help us to keep our flesh crucified, that it doesn’t have say over our spirit, and may your Holy Spirit aid us in strengthening, and leading us through your Word, and stirring it within us in truth. Keep us safeguarded against any false doctrine, and bring us up in the way we should go. Please also send aid to any of those who may have an overrun spirit, and give them strength. This we pray in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
