Showing Good Judgement – Daily Devotion of Proverbs chapter twenty nine, Verse 4

4 The king by judgment establisheth the land: but he that receiveth gifts overthroweth it.

Daily Inspiration from This Verse – Showing Good Judgement

Considering that we as Christians are sons and daughters of THE Judge of all creation as well as its Creator, we should be found showing good judgement in all matters pertaining to life. As we’ve discussed in the past, good judgement isn’t the same thing as judging.

Not our Job

Judging someone in a manner that has been reserved for the Lord is not our responsibility. Actually we’re told by the Lord to judge not, lest we be judged. Having the good sense to make life and spiritual choices that are just and wise according to the Lord, is a far cry from condemning someone when we feel the desire to do so. That is the difference between using judgement and leveling judgement.

Showing good judgement is a bit different than knowing the difference between right and wrong. Many people out there know what is right and wrong, yet choose to do wrong nonetheless. Where wrongdoing abounds, good judgement is wanting.

Bribes fuel Greed and Hinder Good Judgement

Above, we see a land overthrown by way of its king receiving gifts. This gives us a good idea of how powerful a bribe can be when a ruler is given to greed.

When stuff is given power by our own lusts as the case would be above, we are no longer using good judgement, but rather handing judgement over to someone else. Let’s scale it down a bit, to allow this to enter into our own lives. I’ll use this site as an example, as it is a large part of my life.

Good Ideas need no Bribe

As of right now, I am in charge of what goes on here on this page. I enter all of the information in, the writing, format, what have you. If someone has an idea for the site, I pray about it, and weigh whether or not it’s a good fit and proceed from there.

Say someone one day approached me with an idea that I rejected due to it being against the reason for this site or extremely unbiblical. Then they come back at me with a gift if I were to do it despite how I feel about it, and I take the gift and do what they want because what they’re offering is just what I wanted or needed.

This is allowing my worldly desires to trump showing good judgement, and concede control over to the one who is offering the gift. This is never a good thing in any circumstance and because of my willingness to ignore good judgement (and the Lord for that matter), the control of the site is overthrown in a similar fashion to the verse above.

If what someone wants is a good, solid idea for anything from a web page to governmental issues and everything in between, no gift or bribe is ever necessary. That is of course if the person of authority is just.

If a bribe is necessary look out, because only those who harbor intentions against yours will feel the need to use them. Using a bribe is deceitful, but receiving one is handing over the keys.

In every area of our lives, the Lord would rather us showing good judgement in the face of a bribe, rather than suffering the consequences of giving in to our desires.

Thank you for the example you’ve given us in your Word, and for ever warning you give us through it about the behavior of those who weave themselves into this world, rather than being separated from it. Give us the strength Lord to resist false gifts or bribes in ever way. Stir into our remembrance your Word against giving a bribe if an occasion presents itself, and stir up your warnings when approached with a bribe. Thank you for all that you are, and all that you’ve done. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ we pray.

Have you ever noticed that showing good judgement becomes more difficult when it is at the most important time to show good judgement?

  1. Thanks Brian…a load here indeed. How this world is judgemental is absolutely bizare. The heathen run around judging every good thing, calling it evil. These reprobates are high minded and full of pride. They have, long ago, judged the Lord Jesus Christ, and His Word, as being narrow minded and hateful. As true believers, we must be separated from the worldly pride, allowing the Lord’s Word to guide us, as we use good judgement. As it is said in Psalm 1, we are to meditate on His law both day and night. As long as His Law is our standard, we can use good judgement. Thanks again Brian…stay strong Brother.

    • Hi there George,
As always, well spoken. Everything you’ve just said is true, and is a sign of the times that we’re in. But also, a sign of the times that are coming! Even so, come Lord Jesus!!!
Thank you for your great comment Brother, and God bless you in Jesus name!
      In Christ,

  2. Hi Brian,
You have helped me understand the difference between putting someone down with judgement & using judgement in a way that helps you make wise decisions about a person. A person’s personality & character will help us make decisions in friendship, a marriage or business partner and at the voting booth. The denomination I was brought up in taught me this, but somehow I became confused about it lately. I suppose because we live in a world that says don’t judge, but does so constantly, this old mind hangs on for dear life for truth. It is only in THE WORD, our LORD JESUS. One place I think that we in the Church need strength in is to discern between GOD’S WORD & the speech of the world

    • Hi there Janet,
Yeah the world will do that. Confusion is running rampant out there and so little truth gets a voice. The Word of the Lord however, will remain steadfast through all of this world’s spaghetti like “truth,” that twists and spins all over the place.

The subject of using judgement is often messed around with by people that want to have the right to judge others. I’ve seen that in action before and have been on the receiving end of it a time or two. I have even been witness to fellow Christians thinking they have the right to judge by what spirit another Christian is doing something. Not testing, but judging.

This is how we commit sin against the Holy Ghost, which will not be forgiven, when we accuse the Holy Ghost of being Beelzebub. It happens all the time, and few bat an eye. If a preacher says something they don’t like, if an opinion is different between one Christian and another, so on and so on. Some people actually believe that they are in the right to judge a spirit of another man as if we can see into a man’s heart the way the Father does.

None of this is an accident. If the enemy can cause Christians to sin against each other in the name of the Lord, we wind up doing his work for him. So when you think about it, it is a clever thing on the enemy’s behalf to create such confusion as it would relate to using judgement.

Judging things against the Word of God to determine what’s right and wrong is just. But leveling down judgement upon another isn’t our responsibility. That’s the Lord’s job. We can inform others if they are doing something that isn’t right in the eyes of the Lord, if we can prove it through his Word. In my opinion that’s just looking out for someone, not judging.

But I’ve seen people condemn others to hell for preaching about the rapture. I’ve also seen the same toward others preaching against the rapture. Flat earth vs round is turning into the same thing. The flesh just really wants to judge others. I believe that it is in the skill set of most people to do this, simply because the flesh is wicked and by nature wants to go against what the Lord would will.

I am blessed to have taken part in helping you understand the difference. I don’t think that I wrote all of this for you, but for those who have come and checked your comment out. The more people that understand the difference between using good judgement and avoid using judgement against others as a “my way or the highway” kind of thing, the better.

Thank you for your comment Sister and I agree with your prescription whole heartedly! May the Lord bless you mightily in Jesus precious name.
      In Christ,
