Proverbs 16: King James Bible
Silver and Gold – Daily Devotion of Proverbs chapter sixteen, Verse 16
16 How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver!
Daily Inspiration from These Verses – Silver and Gold
These words are coming from someone who was the richest person on the planet. Not only was he unparalleled in wealth, but also in wisdom. Both were a gift from the Father, given to him at the onset of his reign.
This tells us, that he is uniquely qualified to weigh in on the matter of which of the two are better. Even to this day, there hasn’t been anyone who’s been able to match him, who simultaneously had both mass quantities of riches, along with mass quantities of wisdom and understanding.
I believe that what I just wrote won’t change until the Lord Jesus establishes his kingdom here on earth, and reigns from the throne of David in Jerusalem. From what I understand, Christ Jesus has mountains of silver and gold stored up, which he will use during his reign upon the earth.
That covers the wealth of Christ, but he’ll also trump Solomon in the wisdom department many fold. That should only make sense, considering that he is after all, the Lord.
However, until that day comes, King Solomon is head and shoulders over all that were before him, and all that have come after him, in the wisdom, understanding, and material wealth department. Anyways, there’s a bit on the authoritative voice King Solomon had on the matter at hand.
We’ve covered similar verses to this in the past, and have spoken a great deal, as to why riches fail where wisdom and understanding abounds. But the Lord tugged me in heart, concerning something that I had never considered before.
And that would be, that riches give the Lord no reason, to give his favor toward anyone. However, wisdom and understanding thrive on the favor of the Lord. Neither silver and gold no matter how much of it, can help us as the favor of the Lord can.
Think about it for a second… Which makes more sense to you; to covet silver and gold, or to seek out favor of the Creator of the silver and gold? To me, it’s a no-brainer.
When you get right down to it, wealth can never make you wise or make you understanding. But, through wisdom and understanding you can acquire wealth, in a manner that pleases the Father.
Over and over again through Proverbs we’ve seen, get wisdom, get understanding, and get knowledge. All of the above are given to us by the Father, by way of the Holy Ghost and his Word.
There are far more reasons, good sound reasons, why we should be seeking these things, rather than coveting what’s considered pavement in Heaven.

17 And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man’s work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear: 18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
20 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, 21 Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.
Thank you for your .revelation, and for your love for all of us, your children. Please Lord, grant us increase in understanding, wisdom, and knowledge. Not merely so that we can have an easier go at life, but for us to please you in our ways, and gain favor from you. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ we pray.
Would you forsake silver and gold for the sake of wisdom and understanding?
