Proverbs 22: King James Bible

Slain in the Streets – Daily Devotion of Proverbs chapter twenty two, Verse 13

13 The slothful man saith, There is a lion without, I shall be slain in the streets.

Daily Inspiration from This Verse – Slain in the Streets

Here we are again, dealing with the slothful man (or person, a gender irrelevant verse). In my opinion, this piece of scripture is along the same vein as the one which says that the wicked flee when nobody’s pursuing them (paraphrasing).

There is one thing that we’re not told in the verse above, that may shape the way we determine what the Holy Ghost is trying to show us. One simple yet important fact is missing.

That would be, whether or not there’s even a real lion outside to be concerned about in the first place. The slothful man saith, doesn’t mean that there’s one out there, but only means that this is what he is saying.

It is possible, that there isn’t even a lion out there. This is fear rearing its ugly head, introduced by this man’s sluggardly ways. Which introduces us to an idea, that we may not have associated with someone bearing a slotherly spirit or mindset.

It’s a progression, meant to encourage and reinforce stagnation. The progression begins with laziness. Then a sense of helplessness as time goes by. Then in comes fear, because eventually, this lazy person is faced with having to deal with things that he’s put off for far too long.

A simple problem can escalate into a fiasco, sure. But how much of that is in the mind of the person that needs to deal with it? How much of that might be an outlook given by way of fear of the unknown?

Most if not all problems great or small, are typically dealt with one step at a time. The sluggard above could have gotten himself together to at least check out what’s going on outside, right? He could have looked around to see if he could spot a lion.

Even if there was one waiting outside, what do you do; sit around waiting for someone else to come up with a solution? Probably not. I don’t have a line waiting outside my door, full of folks to solve all my problems for me, do you? I doubt it.

Sometimes, we need to take even a small slice of initiative, to get through step one of any given problem. Fear comes, and wants to force you to look at the huge mountain that is blotting out the sun in front of you. Fear wants to overwhelm you before you even start.

That is what I believe this verse is displaying to us. We have an enormous advantage that others don’t have (at least yet). We’ve got a direct connection to the Father, to give us aid and strength. We have power over fear, since it is a power of the enemy. The Lord has given us legal status over fear.

The problem is, our enemy is wily and cunning, and would rather us cower in fear, instead of casting it out of our lives for good, through the power and the blood of the Lamb. Satan is our lion in the streets, but the Lord has given us the weapons of our warfare to plow right through him and his garbage.

We need to only to take one step guided by the Father’s hand, then another as he leads. Rather than be as the slotherly man, unwilling to even open the door to take his first step.

Prayer

Father,

Thank you for your encouraging words through your Word, and all of the great and marvellous promises that you’ve made to us through it. Lord, fear always attempts to squeeze itself in between us no matter what’s going on. When this happens Father, please keep us ever mindful of the authority we have in Christ Jesus, and to overcome all obstacles in and through you. And stir up zeal and diligence in our spirit, so that there would never be any room for slotherly or sluggardly behavior to take root. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ we pray.

Amen
