Proverbs 29: King James Bible

Spiritual Harlots – Daily Devotion of Proverbs chapter twenty nine, Verse 3

3 Whoso loveth wisdom rejoiceth his father: but he that keepeth company with harlots spendeth his substance.

Daily Inspiration from This Verse – Spiritual Harlots

There are two verses that run along a vein similar to this one that we’ve covered in past devotionals. If you’d like to check them out, here they are:

A Wise Son

A Foolish Son

Does it really need to be said that keeping company with harlots isn’t a good thing in the eyes of the Lord? I would assume that if you’re here on this site, this part of the verse wouldn’t be any great revelation.

But if we broaden our horizons a little in a spiritual sense, we may find ourselves guilty of spending our substance whilst in the company of spiritual harlots. This is something that we’ve also covered a time or two in the past, but the wording here is interesting.

We have found so many good reasons to study and understand God’s Word, and this is another. When it comes to spiritual matters, where are we getting our information?

Are we getting it by revelation of the Holy Spirit of the Lord through his Word, or from somewhere else? Any form of spiritual doctrine that can’t be found in the Word is going to lead you away from it eventually.

When you stop paying attention to the Word of the Lord, and begin to lend an ear to other sources to broaden your spiritual understanding, you’re keeping company with harlots as far as the Lord is concerned. Any time Israel chased after false gods he considered it adultery.

When we chase after unbiblical information to appease our thirst for spiritual understanding as Christians aren’t we doing the same? The Lord isn’t talking to the harlots in the verse above, he’s talking to those who are chasing them, or “keeping company” with them.

There are certain things that require spiritual discerning, and that which comes by way of revelation by the Spirit of God, most often through his Word. When that revelation comes, there is often two or more places that the Holy Ghost will show you what he’s teaching you.

Wisdom is always there for the taking for those who seek the Lord for it. However, there are many other sources out there, all of nefarious intent just waiting to give you a glimpse of something that is designed to perk your interest.

We are always in danger of deception, due to all of its subtleties. Satan has been around for a long time, and his demonic servants have been around the block a time or two. They know the right buttons to push, the right time to push them, for particular types of people.

Those who are the spiritual harlots are in fact and quite literally the enemies of God Almighty. They are out to hurt you by any means necessary, and in doing so, they hurt your Father.

That’s the only way they can get to him, is by messing with his children. There is no greater victory that they enjoy, than leading a child of God into deception, and have that person spread it to others.

This is how false doctrine starts and spreads. To deceive Christians, the deception has to sound as biblical as possible, with just a sprinkle of misdirection. That’s all it takes. It is that easy, and if the first misdirection is believed, then another is splashed in somewhere, so on and so forth.

Before you know it we’re all thinking that yoga is a great idea despite every pose representing a demonic entity, trouble means that we’re not holy enough, and we can pray to whoever we want to in order to get what we need without angering the Lord.

Yes, all of the above happen already. All introduced by keeping the company of spiritual harlots, rather than sticking to the Word of the Lord, and being obedient to him by his specifications, not those created through false spiritual craftiness.

2 Peter 2: King James Bible

1 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.

Thank you for your truth, and for every gift of treasure you’ve hidden in your Word, made available to us by your Holy Ghost. Deliver us from evil, and from every form of wickedness that would attempt to sway our souls toward the things that are against you and your precepts. Open our eyes to the truth, and set us free from the things that tempt us unseen. When evil tries to come in, rise up like a flood against them Lord. Thank you for  your loving kindness toward all of your children, and if there are any who have been swayed by the evil one, please deliver them. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ we pray.
