Ephesians Chapter Six is instrumental to teach us some very valueable lessons concerning spiritual warfare.

Put on the Whole Armor of God

Do you wonder what it means to put on the Whole Armor of God? Well get ready for some notes, because this is a must for Brothers and Sisters in the Lord to grab hold of and put into practice.

This page is dedicated to revealing the Holy Spirit’s reasoning behind the Whole Armor of God. Do we take the text literally, or is it merely a figurative piece of scripture? What’s the point behind the scriptures that give a detailed layout of each piece?

The Apostle Paul gives many specifics about the Whole Armor of God in Ephesians chapter six and we’ll break it down piece by piece as the study continues. However he also gives us a quick rundown prior to getting into listing all the pieces, as to why we need to take this piece of scripture seriously.

So on this page we’ll follow suit, and explore the reasoning that he gives in verses 12+13, then move forward with the rest of what he gives us in this chapter that pertains to the subject at hand in following pages of this study. Here are the verses that we’ll be concentrating on throughout the entirety of our journey through the scriptures concerning the Whole Armor of God.

Let’s take the time to give these pieces of scripture the honor that they deserve, having been preserved for us through the Word of God. Here is the chunk of Ephesians that we’ll be concentrating on.

Ephesians Chapter 6put-on-the-whole-armor-of-god-that-ye-may-be-able-to-stand-against-the-wiles-of-the-devil-put-on-the-whole-armor-of-god

11 Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: 18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

Wiles of the Devil

Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

While Definition

1. a trick, artifice, or stratagem meant to fool, trap, or entice; device.
2. wiles, artful or beguiling behavior.
3. deceitful cunning; trickery.

be-sober-be-vigilant-because-your-adversary-the-devil-as-a-roaring-lion-walketh-about-seeking-whom-he-may-devour-put-on-the-whole-armor-of-godAs the Holy Spirit would have us know in the above verse, the Whole Armor of God aids us to stand against the wiles of the devil. I looked up this word wiles and found that it is mentioned only one other time in the Bible, and that is found in the book of Numbers.

Numbers 25:

17 Vex the Midianites, and smite them: 18 For they vex you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, which was slain in the day of the plague for Peor’s sake.

It’s interesting that this points us to this verse, because if you read that whole saga between Numbers chapter 22 all the way through to chapter 25, you get a full picture of what the Moabites and Midianites were doing. In reading those chapters, you find Balak the king of Moab along with the princes of the Midianites doing everything he can to persuade the prophet Balaam to curse Israel, so they may be easily taken by the armies of the nations that encircled them as they traversed.

Maybe it would be a good idea to stop reading this page right now, open up your Bibles and go to Numbers 22 and read it all the way through to chapter 25. It’s by no accident that the first verse in this study points back to these chapters concerning the wiles of the devil. You find before long that these chapters entail God’s protection for Jacob (all of Israel), despite the conspiring and attempts to curse Israel.

God eventually tells Balaam why he would not curse, but only bless the house of Israel, and it was because of the spiritual condition of Israel in those days. Obedience to the Lord reaps protection from the Lord. Another thing to point out is, this transpired over and over again without Israel even knowing about it at all. The Lord is actively protecting every one of us right now in one way or another. Maybe even in several ways at once, but most of which we’ll not ever know about till we stand before him one day.

Also take note that there’s a strange parallel between what Balak and Balaam were attempting to do and what Satan did against Job. After reading those chapters in Numbers, check out Job chapters one and two. Just as Israel was protected by God because of their obedience to him before they wound up being what the Lord called adulterous, so also was Job protected as Satan complained to the Lord:

Job 1:

10 Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.

thanks-to-satan-complaining-to-god-about-things-weve-learned-about-the-hedge-of-protection-given-by-god-for-those-who-love-him-smooth-move-put-on-the-whole-armor-of-godReading this I chuckle a little to myself and here’s why. I wonder how Satan feels that him opening his big mouth has given us insight and something to seek out as a defense against him? This is the first place in the Bible where we learn that the Lord places a hedge of protection around us, our families, our properties, and all that we have on every side. And this was going on with Job because of his righteousness and obedience to God.

So to come back to the first verse in this study, the connection that we can make is that the Armor of God being made reference to in Ephesians, helps us to stand against these wiles of the Devil. Protection from the unseen craftiness that is at work against us, that we may never see coming, or may never notice with all natural senses, until the work behind it begins to take fruition.

Both of those circumstances also involved petitioning to God by the wicked against God’s own. In Kingdom of Darkness in a Fallen World, I go into the topic of spiritual legalities; opening doors and windows spiritually either knowingly or unknowingly. In both of these cases the ones being protected caused for there to be a breach spiritually, which allowed a drop through a dam to escalate into a full rush of unwanted circumstances. God’s Armor helps us to keep from these things, according to Ephesians 6:11.

Identifying the Enemy

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.identifying-the-enemy-put-on-the-whole-armor-of-god

That verse fills us in as to why we need to put on the Armor in the first place. These are the reasons the Holy Spirit sees fit to inform us, who and what we are actively up against. Immediately in the first portion of this verse we learn who we’re not using this armor against. And that would be other people, or as he puts it, flesh and blood. These are spiritual weapons that are intended to be used in defense or in offense against spiritual beings. Let’s see other references in the Word to elaborate on what’s being said here.

noun, plural principalities.
1. a state ruled by a prince, usually a relatively small state or a state that falls within a larger state such as an empire.
2. the position or authority of a prince or chief ruler; sovereignty; supreme power.
3. the rule of a prince of a small or subordinate state.
4. the Principality, British. Wales.
5. principalities, Theology. An order of angels. Supra-mundane powers often in conflict with God. Ephes. 6:12.

Don’t forget who’s world this is for the time being. It is under Satan’s authority thanks to Adam’s fall, and throughout the ages Satan has stationed different powerful fallen angels over different territories around the world. No other book in the Bible describes how this works better than the book of Daniel where there are two spiritual princes mentioned. First one was the Prince of Persia, and the second was the Prince of Grecia (Greece).

Daniel 10:

12 Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words. 13 But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia.

20 Then said he, Knowest thou wherefore I come unto thee? and now will I return to fight with the prince of Persia: and when I am gone forth, lo, the prince of Grecia shall come.

The angels Gabriel and Michael were not fighting the physical flesh and blood ruler of Babylon. Nor was Gabriel talking about contending with the flesh and blood prince of Grecia. He was referring to the spiritual fallen angelic beings that had been given reign and authority over these territories by Satan himself.

But, we are given insight into the Kingdom of Heaven as well. There are principalities that are still on God’s side that have not fallen. Where they are stationed I’m not sure, perhaps over different places throughout God’s entire Kingdom aside from the world at large (as it is under Satan’s rule), save for only one account.

Daniel 10:21

But I will shew thee that which is noted in the scripture of truth: and there is none that holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince.

There was a prince stationed keeping watch over the people of Israel, and that was Michael the Archangel. Honestly since the Resurrection of Christ, I have no clue how this works anymore, but I believe anyway, that Michael is still there, and will remain until Christ’s return.

Using what we can see as a reflection of what’s going on in the spiritual realm, no prince of any nation stands alone in battle. How can a prince be a prince without having subjects under him? So to me anyways, it’s a safe assumption that these spiritual princes have subjects under them as well to do their bidding, and to have direct orders from Satan trickle through princes, down into the lower ranks to get whatever it is done. Here are some other verses that pertain to these spiritual princes.

Romans 8:

37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. 38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Ephesians 3:

9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ: 10 To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God, 11 According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord:

Colossians 1:

15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: 16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

angel-in-battle-put-on-the-whole-armor-of-godThese three verses in Colossians describe where these things came from, and their original purpose according to the Lord’s initial plan in the beginning before Satan decided to ruin everything. He would in time draw one third of these beings unto himself and away from their original place given by God, and re-stationed as Satan saw fit for his own purposes.

Colossians 2:

13 And you, being dead in your sins and the un-circumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; 14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; 15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

Christ Jesus made a show of them openly in his victory. Perhaps parading in their faces that there’s a new time coming, and the countdown to their utter destruction was set and ticking away. There is a day established by God, where Christ will get up off of the thrown of his Father, and personally come down and reign on the thrown of David, and will establish a different kind of order around this place, both physically and spiritually.

Revelation 20:

6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

This is good news for those of us who are called by his name and will qualify to reign and rule with Jesus. But there are a host of fallen angelic beings that will be displaced and violently removed from their positions, and thrown into the Lake of Fire. And among these beings will be the principalities that have ruled for these thousands of years. So the parade of Christ having victory on the cross wasn’t the best of news for those reigning princes, but an introduction to their doom.

1. ability to do or act; capability of doing or accomplishing something.
2. political or national strength: the balance of power in Europe.
3. great or marked ability to do or act; strength; might; force.
4. the possession of control or command over others; authority; ascendancy: power over men’s minds.
5. political ascendancy or control in the government of a country, state, etc.: They attained power by overthrowing the legal government.
6. legal ability, capacity, or authority: the power of attorney.
7. delegated authority; authority granted to a person or persons in a particular office or capacity:
the powers of the president.powers-put-on-the-whole-armor-of-god

Powers is the second item on the list of what we are up against in Ephesians 12. In the definition above, we’ll see that this could be recognized as the next layer (or perhaps several layers) down in authority delegated by Principalities. In fact, as I gather scriptural references and present it for your consumption, you’ll notice that in many of these verses, principalities and powers go along together.

Also there are verses that include powers on God’s side of the battle, not just in Satan’s kingdom. The same (I would like to add) goes for principalities, but there is only one mentioned in the Bible that would fall into the category of the Kingdom of Heaven, which would be the Archangel Michael as we discussed above. As these two are intertwined, we’ll see some of the same scriptures that have been included above.

Matthew 24:

29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

Luke 21:

26 Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.

Romans 8:

38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

Ephesians 3:

10 To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God.

Colossians 1:

16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

Colossians 2:

15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

Hebrews 6:

5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come

powers-of-heaven-will-be-shaken-put-on-the-whole-armor-of-godThis verse gives us a peek into the future and the reign of Christ on this earth in his millennial reign. There will be new powers established in the heavens. As we can see by scriptures above in Matthew and Luke, the existing powers will be shaken up pretty badly before they are hurled headlong into the Lake of Fire.

1 Peter 3:

22 Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.

This is another verse referring to the existence of powers that serve Christ in the Kingdom of Heaven. This should come to no surprise, as Satan is known to be quite the counterfeiter. So he’s following suit copying God’s order and governmental structure wit his fallen angelic counterparts. Since his fall, he’s striven to be just like the most high. Isaiah 14:12-20, Ezekiel 28:12-19.

Rulers of the darkness of this worldvisions-from-god-put-on-the-whole-armor-of-god

Darkness is used for several different reasons in the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. The following verses I chose that pertain that which the Rulers of Darkness have to do with.

But there are many more verses you can find while reading where the word darkness is used. These I believe help us with specifics, used to denote a demonic element to a space, action, way of life, thoughts, etc..

It’s good to point out that the Holy Ghost wasn’t talking about physical spaces that are void of light or color. But was instead talking about a demonic skill set, not blackness of night for example. I say that because there are tons of new age doctrines that believe in literal light and dark beings meaning evil beings are dark, and good beings are light.

That hooey seems to ignore the intent behind these verses in scripture, taking them all out of context and it is that degree of separation from the truth which drives them away from sound doctrine straight into deception and spiritual captivity. The very light that they have in them is darkness (Luke 11:35).

Proverbs 2:

13 Who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness;

Isaiah 60:

2 For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the Lord shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee.

Luke 11:

34 The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness. 35 Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness.

Luke 22:

53 When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.

John 3:

19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

John 8:

12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

Acts 26:

18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.

This verse gives us a clear definition of this usage of darkness being the power of Satan. That’s the blanket that covers the Kingdom of Darkness in it’s entirety, his power and authority over this world.

Romans 13:12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the Armour of Light.

This is a clear reference to the God’s Armor. Don’t forget, God id light, in him there is no darkness at all. So he could as well have said armor of God in this verse.

Ephesians 5:

11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

Colossians 1:

13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:

1 Thessalonians 5:

5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.

1 Peter 2:

9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light;

angel-of-light-put-on-the-whole-armor-of-godSo just to reiterate something I touched upon above. Darkness is a word used to sum up the power and authority of Satan, and Light is used to sum up the power and authority of God in Christ Jesus. It doesn’t mean that if someone shuts off the power to your house, you’re dwelling in Satan’s domain, and when it’s turned back on then you’re back into God’s domain.

What many who have fallen into the trap of a new age type doctrine don’t realize is the following:

2 Corinthians 11:

14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

The end that the Apostle Paul is talking about there is an evil end, not a good one. So the rulers of the darkness of this world work and operate through the darkness of Satan’s power. I believe that this is where we separate from the fallen angelic domain and land into the demonic authority.

Though demonic entities have their own power structure upon this earth, they are far less powerful than their fallen angelic masters. They have been cursed to this earth, which in my mind anyways eliminates them for qualifying for being included in the powers of the air or heavens category.

Against spiritual wickedness in high places

high-placesegypt-put-on-the-whole-armor-of-godHigh places often are desired places to conduct spiritual activity (Leviticus 26:30, Numbers 33:52, Deuteronomy 12:2, Deuteronomy 33:29, 1 Kings 12:32, 2 Kings 17:11, 2 Kings 17:29, so on and so on) and was the favorite among the Baal worshipers of Biblical times. The same practice is typical all around the world concerning all types of religions or religious ceremonies.

But there doesn’t have to be a high place in order for people to conduct spiritual wickedness. High places in this sentence could be used as representing a place of worship. It could be a group of (state religion here) worshiping and conducting rituals or ceremonies upon a hill or mountain top, or a guy in his closet at home performing any kind of (state your religion here) ritual to conjure up some sore of spiritual wickedness.

Another form of spiritual wickedness would be on a governmental level. High places being considered as positions of authority. When the wicked rule, the people mourn. Could it be that the Whole Armor of God could grant believers a standard against that from affecting their spiritual or physical lives in some way? Could be.

Could it perhaps even the ability to have clear eyes to see what is going on through the Holy Ghost, instead of falling for the lies and allegiance to evil that courts spiritual wickedness? Take a close look into the book of Daniel concerning this, as his treatment for not following spiritual wickedness in high places landed him in the lions den. The Bible gives us some other examples of spiritual wickedness in high places in this light.

Proverbs 28:

15 As a roaring lion, and a ranging bear; so is a wicked ruler over the poor people.

Proverbs 29:

2 When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.

Proverbs 29:

12 If a ruler hearken to lies, all his servants are wicked.

spiritual-wickedness-in-high-places--washington-put-on-the-whole-armor-of-godSo there are two different ways that we can look at the piece of Ephesians 12 concerning spiritual wickedness in high places. Notice that I didn’t subscribe to the idea that high places are synonymous to heavens. That’s because I believe that if the Holy Spirit intended to have Paul write heavens, it would have said heavens, not places and positions that have often been plagued by spiritual wickedness since the flood.

Either of the two explanations come to the same conclusion. It is man’s activity and participation to cater to demonic spiritual forces to achieve some sort of end, be it religious purposes or for selfish motives. Though the Whole Armor of God does not apply to the fleshly things like the people involved, it does pertain to the spiritual wickedness that is kicked up by their activities and/or witchcraft.

So, after going over these verses and what each of them really entail, don’t you think that we’ve been given scripture handed down by the Father himself through the Holy Ghost, penned by the Apostle Paul, and preserved throughout time for a good reason? Maybe it’s a good idea to do what the Bible says, and put on the Whole Armor of God. Yes, it’s an action that is particularly used “PUT ON”.

And when we put the Armor on, it may not mean too much to us right away, but as we move forward to examine each piece that is listed for us from verses 13-18, we’ll come to a firm and sure understanding of what it really is and what it really does for us spiritually. This page more or less has discussed the reasoning behind why we need it in the first place, and we’ve gone over who we’re up against, what they are, where they are, and a bit into how the Kingdom of Darkness uses these different angelic or demonic beings against us.

The pages after this will be the breakdown into the separate pieces. Please come back to read the up and coming inclusions into this study, because I believe it will give us all a great handle of what the Lord intends for us to understand and realize about what he has given us in this powerful chapter of Ephesians.

  1. Hi Brian, I need this teaching very much right now so I thank God for you writing about the Armour of God. I bookmarked it. God bless you in Christ Jesus name.

    • Hi Deborah,
Thanks for your kind words, and I’m blessed that the Lord is using it to help you out! Glory to the Lord! May the Lord bless you mightily in the name of Christ Jesus.

  2. Thank you for putting this out there!
I believe this is the most critical subject we all should focus on….constantly. Of everything I have written or video or whatever, EPH 6:12 is always in the forefront of the thought.
Without understanding and usage of this chapter, a person has no chance, they are no match.
There is one point (word) you use a few times that I think should be addressed quickly. Hopefully, we could talk privately about it. It is small, it doesn’t change the power of your message but it is important.
Great work, Love ya, and I’m praying for you!
    Peace to you.

    • Hi there James,
Thanks for the comment! I agree that it is critical, and actually had every intention of completing talking about the whole armor of God right here on this page. But the Lord had other plans and wound up driving me to concentrate on the proceeding verses. I’m excited to see what the Lord’s going to bring to light as we continue on with other pages that will be attached to this page. They will wind up as a subcategory to this page, as this page is a sub category to the Spiritual Warfare page.

If I messed anything up I would certainly like to know about it! If you’d like, shoot me an email and let me know in there.
Thanks for your comment and kind words and God bless you in Jesus name.
