6. to mock; jeer.
The verse above isn’t a message to the scorner, but rather, is directed to any of us who may wish to engage one who is scornful. For us who believe in getting the Word of God out there, running into scorners is inevitable.
When sharing the Word, you can usually spot a scorner fairly easy, because they typically approach you, with the motive to show you how much of an idiot you are for your beliefs. People who are generally atheistic (for an example), won’t want to hear it, and will do whatever it takes (walk away, turn the channel, whatever the situation) to not have to hear it. They don’t care, and they’re not militant about it.
The scornful however, using atheists as a continued example, will search out a christian site, group, tweet, event, what have you. They’ll be the ones who do their best to ask questions they don’t think you have the answers for, then reject your answers when you give them.
Just to inform you the “real” answers to their question (which is dead wrong or wildly taken out of context), and continuing to do their utmost to either offend or frustrate a believer or a group of believers.
The scorner will not go to the wise, because the wise will tell them something that they’ll not want to hear, so they’ll stick to whatever will tickle the ears. They are driven by a pack mentality, and go with the flow of whatever is good for them at the time.
Scorners are some of the most deceived people that you can find, and without much prayer and divine intervention (or both), they’ll live and eventually die that way. I used atheism as an example, because that is the group that I’ve had to contend with the most as it relates to folks who are flat out scornful against me because of my faith, and the Lord God himself.
But you can find scornful people in pretty much any good sized group of people, no matter what it is. Be it a religious organization or a sports team.
Scorners are always out there, and their true colors of being such bleed through whatever face they try to wear. It’s only a matter of time, before they have something or someone to be scornful toward, and the thing is, they’ll rarely if ever, keep it to themselves.
Focusing on a Church body situation, you may find at the beginning of a gossip, a very scornful individual, who will need far more prayer, than they’d need your ear to fill with contempt for someone else.

2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 Without natural affection, truce breakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, 4 Traitors, heady, high-minded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; 5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
Thank you for the heads up in your Word, about what we should be expecting as we run into scorners. But Lord, though they reject our words, may your Word stick to them, and bother them till they decide to find the true matter out, and not continue to reject your knowledge. May any who can be saved, be saved. Forgive them Father, and help us all to remember, that nobody has been scorned as much as you have, no matter what we wind up going through. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ we pray.
