The Seed War
The seed war that has been going on since God declared it back in Genesis 3, is still going on and is unrelenting. I wasn’t quite sure how to tackle all of this, because this topic branches off into so many different directions. But after talking with the Lord about it, he’s put it on my heart to just simply start from the beginning and go on from there. So that’s exactly how I’m going to do it.
In this post, we’ll find out where demons really came from, and actually who they came from. This seed war began back in the Garden of Eden, and is built up to a great crescendo as we’re rapidly approaching Daniel’s 70th week.
Building a Scenario
There are libraries with shelves literally filled with volumes covering this topic in one way or another, but I’m going to try to keep it as bare bones as possible for the sake of being direct and also for clarity. So I am going to build a scenario here, in which I’ll confess right up front that liberties will be taken to make as much sense out of the whole deal behind the Seed War as possible. We’re going to tackle in Seed War Part 1, the beginning of this war, and deal with the strange issue of the Sons of God taking for themselves Daughters of Men. and carry it right up to God pronouncing Judgement on their offspring. Very important to cover to get a grasp on what exactly happened and why, because (spoiler alert), it’ll happen again.
Before getting into it, I’d like to mention briefly about an extra-biblical text that covers this topic extensively, which is the Ethiopian version of the Book of Enoch, or otherwise known as 1 Enoch. Just giving a heads up, as this is the first time I’ve referred to an extra-biblical source on this site. As I would warn with anything of this nature, don’t even bother with the Book of Enoch unless you have a firm understanding of the Word of God.
Don’t let anything lead you astray, because most ancient extra-biblical texts can actually run against God’s word and lead you down a path away from where God wants you to be. I’m not saying that particularly the case with the Book of Enoch, but search the scriptures in God’s Word against all things (Acts 17:11).
So, just to move that out of the way, I’ve created a page covering this very strange book in the Bible Study section simply called the Book of Enoch And I would like to encourage you to head over there and check it out, particularly if the Book of Enoch is something new to you.
Phase 1: Declaring War
Satan made the first move in this war that’s been going on in the heavens. If you’ve been keeping up with this series, you’ve seen how that’s transpired. To summarize, God’s counter move to Satan’s rebellion was to kick Satan out of his position in Heaven, and ultimately placed him under Adam’s authority. Satan usurped Adam through Eve via deception, and caused for God to make a declaration in Genesis 3 that Satan has been trying to avoid ever since.
14 And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
The word seed used here can mean a couple of things to us. One would be that it’s used as another way of referring to offspring, which is common everywhere in the Bible. The other way to look at it is in terms of genetics. Referring to what the seed consists of. When you think about it, that’s what makes one seed different from another, what it’s made out of, or what’s inside.
God made that declaration, and I believe that Satan only partially knew what that was suppose to mean. But what he could have taken from it was the following:
- Satan learned that he was going to have seed. Perhaps there was something in Satan’s heart that we’re not informed about concerning having seed.
- He learned that God was going to be backing the Woman’s seed somehow.
- More troubling to him, the seed of the woman was going to defeat his seed. That’s obviously a problem for Satan.
- Another thing that Satan could have received from this declaration is an overall sense that his days are numbered.
- Lack of particulars leaves the burden on him to try to figure out what to do about it.
So you can see, with just a few words, Satan had quite a bit to try to figure out if he thinks that he still has a shot at survival on his own terms. But since he pushed man to fall and brought all sin and corruption upon the earth, at least he had some ground to work with. However, there’s one inescapable problem that Satan has to deal with. Numbers. In the war in Heaven he was outnumbered 2 to 1, having only convinced one third of the angelic host to think he was their God to be.
A Troubling Future
Being so close to creation, and how different things were before the flood, I take from different scriptures that things may have been a bit different around this planet between spiritual beings and physical. There’s no way I can prove that, but when looking into it, you really can’t escape that strange sense of things. Ever since the fall of man, Satan has had complete control of this world that we live in. Considering that Jesus didn’t have anything to say on the contrary when it was offered to him while being tempted, it seems that would be the case.
5 And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6 And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.
7 If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.
8 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
So, as you can see in the verses above, Jesus had a beef with Satan mentioning worship, he did not have anything to say about Satan’s authoritative claims over the world. In my opinion, that seals the deal concerning who was in charge of the place since the fall of man. That whole topic has been covered at length on the Bible Study page: Why was Jesus Tempted in the Wilderness? I brought up all of that so I can say the following.
As a result of what God had to say about his future, Satan had to figure out 2 things.
- How can I prevent the seed of the woman from coming to be?
- How do I compensate numerically against the forces of Heaven?
Step 1: Preventing the seed of the woman
Well, God had set things up somewhere so Satan couldn’t just all out kill Adam or his offspring. Seeing that the relationship between Man and God, though severed in comparison to what it use to be, was still active. This is clear with the following chapters in Genesis. He needed to find a way to either kill man or further pollute man till man’s seed was no different than his own. That would be a solution to the whole problem. Cancelling out the problem before it happens. No pure seed of the woman, no danger in the future. Also this would cause God to have failed, and actually turning his declaration into a lie. God will not lie, so that would actually create a whole different set of repercussions that would all work to Satan’s advantage.
Step 2: How to get good help in those days
Eventually it seems that his answer would be resting in the skies. Being an angel himself, he knows a thing or two about them, and having had the ability to deceive one third of them in the past, maybe he could find a way to do it again? We can find in God’s Word, that he found a way to get them to turn their backs on their Heavenly position, and to come down to earth.
Now in Genesis, Satan’s role is not mentioned in the following chapters, just certain things that you can find his fingerprints on. And there’s one thing that I’d put money on, that he knew would draw more of his fellow angels away from God’s grace. A big billboard flashing to the heavenly host advertising lust. And he could use God’s creation that Satan hated so much to pull it off.
The Sons of God and Daughters of Men
The answer to the equation rested in the beauty of the daughters of men. I’ve quoted the following verses in a previous section of this series, and I’m going to do it again. This is where any effort Satan might have invested into bringing others to him really payed off in buckets. And would in time, actually provoke the world’s destruction.
1 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, 2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.
It is difficult to describe how big of a deal this event really was. I believe that’s why the following verse seems to pop up out of nowhere. This verse to me, seems like God had his hand on his face, kind of shaking his head disgustedly.
3 And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
Now that didn’t take effect until after the flood. But for some reason, God found it necessary to place that verse exactly where it is. My view is, the Holy Spirit made sure to place it right there, pointing to how much it affected the grand scheme of things. Angels mingling with women of the day. We see the end results in the following verses.
4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.
5 And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 And it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.
After a few verses about Noah, it continues with this:
11 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. 12 And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.
13 And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.
All these verses say so much, and from this point, the Lord starts speaking with Noah about building the Ark. Man had become corrupted, the earth had become corrupted, in fact God uses the term “all flesh”, which assumes, well, all flesh, not just man’s. So evidently what we can gather is that the Sons of God (Angels as we discussed in a previous post called Angels and Demons), and all that they did was a pivotal situation that lasted several hundred years or so, resulting in God finding it necessary to reboot the earth.
The Watcher’s Offspring
The book of Enoch gives us a rather detailed account of this entire event, and elaborates on God’s reasoning for the flood. The Angels came down and rested upon Mt Hermon in the days of Jarred who is Enoch’s father, and all 200 of these angels made a pact together to all stick to their plans of taking whatever punishment God would have in mind as a result of them taking wives for themselves.
The problem is that first off they “took” wives for themselves. An interesting way to put it. Also, their offspring were beings of a sort that God did not intend, sanction, give any approval for, create, nor create any place for. An excellent indicator that it’s just not a good idea. These offspring being half angel, half human, became giants in the land. The account Enoch gives us makes it clear that these giants did all kinds of things that were wicked, as such that had never existed before on earth. In Enoch, God calls them bastards a few times, indicating they had no part in him, nor any part in his plan for the inhabitants of the earth. Here’s their origin:
Enoch 7 (the verse numbers are in weird places, I left them for reference)
And they 3 became pregnant, and they bare great giants, whose height was three thousand ells: Who consumed 4 all the acquisitions of men. And when men could no longer sustain them, the giants turned against 5 them and devoured mankind. And they began to sin against birds, and beasts, and reptiles, and 6 fish, and to devour one another’s flesh, and drink the blood. Then the earth laid accusation against the lawless ones.
So right off the bat, we can see that the angelic offspring were nasty characters. They’d consume everything that man was working for. And when they’d run out of that, they’d consume the humans. And if that wasn’t enough, they’d try to consume each other. Collecting their actions we can collect the following:
- They consumed the acquisitions of Men 7:4
- They consumed mankind 7:5
- They were cannibalistic against each other 7:6
- they drank blood 7:6
- They were taught “secret things” by their angelic fathers who God calls the Watchers 10:7+8
- They are not welcome into heaven after death, not any other place that the Lord has established for either men or angels 15:10
- God will destroy their spirits in the end and have them hurled into the lake of fire 10:11
Now don’t get the wrong idea about these Nephelim (Giants). We’re pretty well conditioned these days to consider giants as big oafs. Generally stupid, barely capable of stringing a sentence together. Not so with these guys. They were taught all kinds of things by their fathers as we’ll see later on when we discuss God’s judgement on the Watchers. They were far from stupid, and more likely to be extremely intelligent due to their angelic genes.
Yesterday’s dead Nephelim are Today’s Demons
Does the above list sound at all familiar to anyone? I’m sure if you’ve been keeping up on the ‘Are Demons Real’ series, you’d probably say yes. In 1 Enoch, God levels out Judgement against the Watchers and their offspring. I’ve included parts that give a detail of what he decided to do with the spirits of the giants, considering there was no place that God had created for them.
8 And now, the giants, who are produced from the spirits and flesh, shall be called evil spirits upon 9 the earth, and on the earth shall be their dwelling. Evil spirits have proceeded from their bodies; because they are born from men and from the holy Watchers is their beginning and primal origin; 10 they shall be evil spirits on earth, and evil spirits shall they be called. [As for the spirits of heaven, in heaven shall be their dwelling, but as for the spirits of the earth which were born upon the earth, on the earth shall be their dwelling.] And the spirits of the giants afflict, oppress, destroy, attack, do battle, and work destruction on the earth, and cause trouble: they take no food, but nevertheless 12 hunger and thirst, and cause offences. And these spirits shall rise up against the children of men and against the women, because they have proceeded from them.
So there is the origin of what we call demons today. This explains so much concerning what we’ve covered up to this point throughout this entire series. Why do demons have a whole set of different characteristics than fallen angels do? Because they are actually something that died, as their fathers have not died, nor will they. These are evil spirits who are body-less, which is why they are the ones who possess people and animals, whereas fallen angels don’t have to.
Well, I am going to continue this in another post that will be coming out shortly. We’ll Pick back up on the fate of the Watchers, and follow the Seed War right up to the flood of Noah.
