Daily Inspiration from These Verses – The Slothful
We’ve touched on this topic a bit in several other devotionals. Where the word slothful is used here, we could also direct our attention to other places in Proverbs, where it speaks of the sluggard. It’s going to be the same type of person.
The type of person that we’re looking at, is the opposite of the diligent. So in this single verse, we’ve got two completely different groups of people.
Have you ever seen a sloth on television or the internet? If not, head to YouTube and do a search for sloth footage, so you can get an understanding of what the Lord’s saying here. Slow, lethargic, apathetic, lazy, inactive, etc.. That is what we’d call being slothful.
But on the other side of the coin, we’ve got the diligent. But not just the diligent behaving diligently, but the diligent bearing rule! Now that I think about it, I don’t think I’ve ever worked anywhere in my life, where the people that were in authority over me, were anything but diligent.
Having been a foreman, I can tell you right now that diligence is among the most important traits to have. If a foreman starts to get lazy or “too comfortable,” his portion of work begins to pile up, employees get annoyed, employers get even more annoyed, and that’s the short track to either a demotion or termination.
But the diligent shall bear rule. Someone who successfully bears rule over anything, must be awake, alert, willing to be bothered, and should be relentless about getting the job done. In other words, on top of everything.
You can’t do this without being diligent, because there are many times where one may not “feel” like being on top of everything. Ignoring those feelings, or temptations of stepping into slotherly behavior, is exactly the kind of diligence that the Lord is looking for in us, and consequently, is what employers typically look for in people as well.
Unfortunately for some, they’ll never know the fruits that come from diligence. Depression can be this paralyzing, Poor health can also cause for folks to lack the energy or ability to be diligent. There are spiritual forces always at work, willing to oppress people into apathy and sluggish behavior.
There are a host of reasons that people either don’t have, or are unwilling to have, the gusto required in order to be diligent. But no matter what the issue, reason, excuse, or ailment may be, there is nothing impossible to the Creator of all the universe and everything in it.
If anyone can get anyone out of a funk, it’s the Lord. If anyone can introduce adequate motivation, it’s the Father. Just ask him, and he’ll help you to break free from the thousand mile stare of being slothful, and begin to show you different ways, methods, scriptures, concerning what you need to do about it.

Thank you for the instruction that you give, and for what you’re willing to do in order that we’re equipped to walk the road you’ve placed us on. Please Father, lift the heavy yoke of all this world has to throw at us, that would either promote or cause for us to become sluggish or slothful. Quickened all of us Lord, to be every bit as diligent as you’d will for us to be, and lead us ever closer to your purpose for our lives. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ we pray.
Have you ever been put in a position where you needed to decide, whether you were going to be the diligent or the slothful?
