Daily Inspiration from Proverbs 5 P.43 – The Strange Woman

Proverbs 5: King James Bible

The Strange Woman – Daily Devotion of Proverbs chapter five, Verses 3-6

3 For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil: 4 But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword.

5 Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell. 6 Lest thou shouldest ponder the path of life, her ways are movable, that thou canst not know them.

Daily Inspiration from These Verses

Here is the entrance of one of the two women that we can see detailed through the book of Proverbs. The other being the “she” that is described in earlier chapters as embodying the stuff of wisdom, understanding, knowledge and discretion.

The woman being spoken about in verses 3-6, are the exact opposite of those traits, and the repercussions of associating with this woman are disastrous. Her job is to get into your life and and escort you right off the track that the Lord would rather you stay on in all of his wisdom and understanding.

The path of this woman is mysterious, and isn’t easily pinned down. But the end is sure, which is right into the pit, and that’s where she will dump all who follow her down into it.

The book of Proverbs is one of two different books that detail two different women. The other is the book of Revelation.

In the book of Revelation, you see the Woman with child who is being persecuted by the Dragon, and also the Whore of Babylon who rides the beast, drunk from the blood of the Saints. It’s interesting (to me anyway) that there is a strong resemblance between the woman spoken of above in this chapter of Proverbs, and the woman that rides the beast.

This is one of those areas, where the meaning of a cluster of verses can be multi layered, kind of like an onion. On the surface, it may seem that the Lord is warning about what the Bible would call a “loose” or “strange” woman. There’s nothing wrong with that at all, but this is going much deeper than the surface.

Anyways, when we’ve got the blinders on, and keep our focus on the Lord of All, and take his commandments seriously, and stick to the path that he’s placed our feet into, we’ll not fall into the temptation to fool around with this woman of trouble.

Revelation 17: King James Bible

3 So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet colored beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.

4 And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet color, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication: 5 And upon her forehead was a name written, Mystery, Babylon The Great, The Mother Of Harlots And Abominations Of The Earth.

6 And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.

Revelation 12: King James Bible

12 And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: 2 And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered.

3 And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. 4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.

We know that you are a jealous God, and have every right to be. You alone are Lord of Lords; there is no other, nor will there ever be. Please help us to discern between all of the things of you, and all of the things of this world, that will never rest until it’s convinced us to play the harlot, and drag us off of your path. Give us all that we’ll need to overcome her, and to cling to our Lord and Savior, your Son, the Lord Jesus. And it’s in his mighty name we pray.

We’ve spoken about two different proverbial layers of the onion of these verses. Can you find another layer of meaning that has to do with this strange woman?
