To Go Astray – Daily Devotion of Proverbs chapter twenty eight, Verse 10
10 Whoso causeth the righteous to go astray in an evil way, he shall fall himself into his own pit: but the upright shall have good things in possession.
Daily Inspiration from This Verse – To Go Astray
The verse above can be understood in two different manners, that we’ve seen through many of the verses up to this point. The two directions would be from a spiritual tense, and a physical.
To go astray Spiritually
In the verse, someone is causing the righteous to go astray. This isn’t a form of backsliding or anything along those lines, but is due to the influence or deception of another person.
Whether it be false doctrines, false religions, or the like, this is a purpose driven action by someone misleading someone else who is already on the right track. The result is leading someone astray from the Father, and from the road that he’s prepared for that person.
Despite how things appear on the surface, when we are led astray from the Father and his will for our lives, spiritual attacks come. They come from so many different directions that most people wouldn’t even recognize them for what they are. Demonic attacks.
When we’re convinced by way of deception to go astray from the Lord, we’re also walking away from his protection. If our enemy can place purpose in our hearts through whatever temptation would work best to take the first baby step away from the Lord, it’s a small victory in the enemy’s camp.
We get bombarded by thoughts, emotions, situations, confusion, and hardships every day. Some are nothing uncommon to normal life, other’s can be extraordinary. These things may be common because it is a common thing for demonic forces to make people miserable, and have honed it down to an art form over the centuries.
That coupled with mankind being a fallen race since Adam (without Christ that is), toil and hardships are hardwired into the flesh. Satan tries his best to keep people from coming to the Lord. Everything from material distractions all the way to death.
Praise God for he that letteth, and woe to the world when he who letteth is removed. 2 Thessalonians 2:7 tells us that “he who letteth” will be removed, then all Hell is going to begin to break loose, literally. But there is only so far that Satan can go for now, as he who letteth isn’t removed yet.
So, he needs to be sneaky about how he drags people away from the Father, to join him in the pit that he’s dug for himself. He is being restrained in several different ways that we can not see. “He who letteth” is also referred to as the “Restrainer” in some Biblical commentary.
Diligence in our relationship with the Father in Christ Jesus, and a working knowledge of the Word of the Lord is key to avoid the stumbling blocks and influences, that would be sent your way with the purpose to derail you from your walk in Christ Jesus.
To go Astray Physically
If there is someone who causes for us to go astray physically, that could be construed as misdirecting someone into an evil fate. There are those who lead others astray for the sake of their own personal gain. Then there are those who cause for people to go astray just for the sake of doing it.
For an extremely exaggerated example, instead of giving someone directions to the closest gas station, you decide to give him directions to go careening off of a cliff to his death. Though this is a silly example, it shows the intent of the person giving the directions.
Wickedness thinks nothing of causing people to go astray into a situation that anyone would consider “an evil way.” That term used in a physical sense would stand for being led to some form of harm however it may come. Purposefully, not accidentally.
Another example of this could be the influential heroin dealer, looking to get someone hooked knowing full well the consequences of being hooked. Or there are more subtle ways that this might happen, that more of us may be found guilty of rather than dealing drugs.
When we lead someone into doing something that we know isn’t going to end well, and is something we know they shouldn’t do, we are placing ourselves in danger of becoming the target of the verse above, rather than the beneficiaries.
We as children of the Most High God, should make sure we fall into the second half of the verse, rather than the second.

Matthew 7: King James Bible
11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him? 12 Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.
13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
Matthew 10: King James Bible
16 Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.
2 Thessalonians 2: King James Bible
7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. 8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:
9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, 10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
1 Peter 5: King James Bible
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: 9 Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
Thank you for your Word, and for giving us insight into the things of the spirit, by your Spirit. Thank you also for the the decree you’ve made above. You said that the upright shall have good things in possession, and those who do evil will fall into their own pit. Lead us Father, and help us to achieve the blessing end, and not the curse. Forgive us for leading others astray regardless the intention, and establish in our hearts a purpose to do others well, and not harm from today forward. Also, help us in our walk, as we desire to dwell and remain inside the bounds of your will, and not fall prey to the enemy’s deceit. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ we pray.
