Daily Inspiration from These Verses – To Keep

Keep the commandments and live, or keep your own soul by keeping the commandments. Sounds simple enough, but do we have a good understanding as to what this is really saying?

The word “keep” isn’t being used here, to tell us to have the commandments of our God as a simple possession. As one would find something and “keep” till the day he dies.

Though we are to literally keep the Word as written on the tablets of our hearts, the usage here has a deeper meaning than that. You can have all of the Word of God written on the tablet of your heart, yet still choose to ignore all of it.

Rather than just to possess the Word, we are also to guard, protect, maintain watch over, observe, celebrate, beware, pay heed to, preserve, regard, and reserve, the commandment of the Lord. All of these other words are from Strong’s definition, as it relates to this wonderful word “keep.”

I would also include, that being a doer of the Word, and not a hearer only, is an active approach to keeping the commandments. To literally walk in the Word of God, moving in all that he’s given us, and shown us to do as we traverse through this world as his ambassadors.

I know, it’s easier said than done. But that is one of the many reasons why the Holy Ghost is inside us, to be a guiding hand in this matter. He will bring into our remembrance different scriptures that pertain to situations that we are faced with.

He is an ever present help during times of trouble, yet it is we who have say as to whether or not he is going to make a difference. It’s on us to listen to him, and to hold on a second, and let him do his work. This is hard to do depending on how busy of a lifestyle you’ve surrounded yourself with. But he is still there.

I kind of imagine it this way: When we take in the Word of the Lord, and have it on the ready in our hearts, the Holy Ghost will retrieve whatever might relate to a situation, and stirs it up inside us. Then we can use it in prayer, to act on it by faith, or whatever the case may be.

When we keep the commandment of the Father, we are also making sure our soul is well taken care of. As we discussed in a previous devotional, the Word of the Lord is the ultimate soul food. A well nourished soul is far better than a fattened fleshly body.

To keep (guard, protect, maintain watch over, observe, celebrate, beware, pay heed to, preserve, regard, and reserve) the commandment, is to keep (guard, protect, maintain watch over, observe, celebrate, beware, pay heed to, preserve, regard, and reserve) your own soul.

Thank you for your Word, and for all of your commandments, as we know that they are for our good, and your glory. Write your Word upon the tablets of our hearts, and renew a fresh spirit within us. Cause for your Holy Ghost to rise up as often as possible, to bring into our remembrance all of the things that you have taught us, and help us to never forsake your Word. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ we pray.
