Proverbs 13: King James Bible
What Inheritance? – Daily Devotion of Proverbs chapter thirteen, Verses 22-23
22 A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children’s children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just. 23 Much food is in the tillage of the poor: but there is that is destroyed for want of judgment.
Daily Inspiration from These Verses – What Inheritance?
I’ve been struggling with verse 22 for quite awhile. I’d think of poor people, and those who will live out their lives, not having been able to leave any inheritance for their children, never mind their children’s children.
I am not a man of means (by any means), and I can tell you right now, at least right this moment, my children will be the beneficiaries of my bills. Isn’t that exciting? Just kidding around, that’s my threat to them when they’re being wiseguys. In all seriousness though, it isn’t that far from the truth. Don’t tell anybody.
So having foreseen this verse while preparing for the last devotional, I was clueless about what to write. While taking it to the Lord, I believe he opened my eyes to something that I’ve never associated with this verse before, and it makes perfect sense for all people. It doesn’t make any difference whether or not you’re rich or poor.
What the Holy Ghost brought into my remembrance, was the following verse:
Exodus 20: King James Bible
5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
After this being brought to mind, it was like the lights were turned on. If the iniquities of the fathers visit their children, and the third and fourth generations of them that hate him, then the opposite should also be true as well.
The inheritance being spoken about in verse 22 isn’t trapped in a physical or financial sense, but is also referring to spiritual things. Let’s take a look at the flip side of the piece of scripture that I quoted above.
Could it be, that the blessings of God that he’s shed upon the fathers who love the Lord, can be carried through their children, and to the children’s (3rd generation) children (4th generation)? I am persuaded that this is so.
Take this to the Lord in prayer, and don’t just rest on what I have to say about it. See what the Lord has to say to you about it, rather than taking what I say as absolute. I’m excited about this, because it is a piece of treasure found, a nugget that has been evading me till just moments ago.
I truly believe that verse 22 above, is the flip side of Exodus 20:5, Numbers 14:18, and Deuteronomy 5:9. Check those pieces of scripture out, you’ll find that they are all very similar, and they all talk about iniquity starting with the fathers to their children, to the 3rd and 4th generations.
Those tell us about the inheritance of the wicked. Above, in verse 22, we see a good man spreading an inheritance to his children, and both the 3rd and 4th generation are mentioned.

Thank you for every nugget of gold that you’ve given us, as you lead us all to find them throughout your written Word. Thank you for the time you spend with us, and for opening our eyes, even when we don’t realize that they’re closed. Father, you are all we’ll ever need, and we praise you. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ we pray.
