Proverbs 4: King James Bible
Word of God Declined – Daily Devotion of Proverbs chapter four, Verses 5-6
5 Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth. 6 Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee.
Daily Inspiration from These Verses
Throughout these devotionals, we’ve spoken allot about wisdom, understanding, and adhering to the Lord’s commandments. But each time we stumble into a fresh set of verses that have to do with either of those subjects, there’s something new included for us to pay attention to.
Sometimes it’s an added commandment, other times it’s what not to do. In the first verse above, we can see what to get, which is wisdom and understanding. But then we are presented with what not to do:
- Forget it
- Decline the Words from his mouth
Concerning “forget it not”
We can sit around all day and try not to forget something. But it’s most important to be mindful of things as they come. What good is memorizing scripture for memorization’s sake?
The Lord would rather us have a sound understanding of his wisdom, instead of a verbatim recollection. The Father demonstrates all over the Word that application is much more important to him than our ability to ace a quiz.
Concerning “neither decline from the words of my mouth”
Decline is a word that can be synonymous with decrease, reduce, lessen, diminish, dwindle, contract, shrink, turn down, reject, brush aside, refuse, rebuff, spurn, repulse, dismiss, reduce, decrease, downturn, downswing, downtrend, devaluation, depreciation, diminution, ebb, drop, slump, and plunge.
Why don’t you take a second to use any of the words above to stand in the place of “decline” to get a good picture of what the Lord is saying to us here. After we do that, a revelation may arise within you concerning the Word of God as it relates to our daily lives.
That revelation should be the command that this verse provides; to not allow God’s Word to be marginalized as it has been for the past several years. How often, in order to satisfy the flesh, have folks dismissed God’s Word?
How often is it rejected? How much has it’s meaning and substance dwindled in our general populations? How many today flat out refuse it? How often is it reduced into something that causes what’s left to have no effect?
None of these things should be so, and I honestly believe, that if it were not for the Spirit of the Living God keeping the Word of the Lord preserved, there’s be nothing real left of it. That is the kind of evil stewards we as the human race truly are.
That is why the Lord himself has sworn, that his Word will endure forever. He said that to insure that no matter what, it will remain, and there’s nothing that anyone in this world can ever do about it.
Related New Testament Scripture
9 And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.
48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.
16 But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.
25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
Help us to get wisdom and understanding, and add to that which we may already have. Help us through your Spirit to never forget, forsake or decline any of the words from your mouth. Preserve us Lord, and keep us, as the loving Father that you are. In the name of Jesus we pray.
When you look out into this world that we’re traversing through, how many different times in one day, can you observe the Word of God Declined by people?
